Track Standouts Compete In Open
Newtown High Schoolâs top track and field athletes competed in the State Open, among the best runners, jumpers, and throwers in the state, at Willowbrook Park in New Britain on Monday.
The NHS girls scored 11 points to finish 18th; Bloomfield, with 65, took first. On the boysâ side, Newtown scored nine points for a 22nd place result; Windsor scored 67 points to win.
Lauren OâConnell was runner-up in the pole vault event with an 11-foot effort, good for seven points. Reagan Cerney was sixth in the 800 meter run in a time of 2:17.48, good for three points, and Amy Anyoha came in eighth in the discus throw with a toss of 108-01, good for a point.
Jake Fenstein earned five points in the 3200 with a fourth-place finish as he completed the two-mile run in a time of 9:23.85. Feinstein also helped the 4x800 relay squad, also consisting of Pat Sullivan, Palmer Lintz, and Dieter Gutbrod, earn a point for its eighth-place effort. The relay team crossed the finish line in a time of 8:08.25. Peter Kerns placed sixth in the 400, finishing in 50.25 for three more NHS points.
OâConnell, Cerney, Feinstein, and Kerns all qualified for the New England Championship meet in Saco, Maine, on Saturday, June 9.
