Newtown Police, Garner Staff To Carry Special Olympics Torch Â
On Friday, June 8, Newtown Police Department members and Garner Correctional Institution staffers are scheduled to participate in the Law Enforcement Special Olympics Torch Run that is slated to pass through town late that morning.
The torch run is a fundraising event that promotes the Special Olympics of Connecticut. The Special Olympics summer games will be held from June 8 through 10 at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven.
Spectators are encouraged to watch as the local runners carry the torch along its route through town.
At approximately 11:15 am, Bethel police will hand off the Special Olympics torch to Newtown police and to Garner staffers at the Dodgingtown Firehouse at 55 Dodgingtown Road (Route 302). The runners will then follow Dodgingtown Road to Sugar Street to Glover Avenue to Queen Street and then to Church Hill Road.
On completing the local leg of the torch run, the runners will hand off the torch to Connecticut State Police troopers at the Blue Colony Diner at 66 Church Hill Road.
Besides the torch run, members of the Newtown Police Union, Local #3153, Council #15, AFSCME, AFL-CIO, will be participating in two other Special Olympics fundraising events in June.
On Sunday, June 24, Officer William Chapman will take part in a bicycling fundraising event at the Connecticut shoreline.
Activities will include a 25-mile, a 50-mile, and a 100-mile bicycle ride along the Connecticut shoreline in the Special Olympicsâ Third Annual Ride For The Flame event.
 Also, on the evening of Wednesday, June 27, town police officers will participate in the Tip-A-Cop event at the Newtown Pizza Palace restaurant at 65 Church Hill Road. Police will be waiting tables and all the tips they receive will be donated to the Special Olympics.
