Girls’ Tennis Team’s Solid Run Ends In State Semis

Newtown High School’s girls’ tennis team, winners of the South-West Conference championship this spring, followed up its first round Class L win over Southington with a quarterfinal-round victory over Fairfield Ludlowe on May 30. The fourth-seeded Nighthawks avenged their only regular-season defeat with a 5-2 triumph over No. 5 Ludlowe at home, to advance to face No. 1 Greenwich in the semifinals.

The Nighthawks got singles wins by top player Caroline Kelly, No. 2 Lauren Frazzetta, and No. 3 Mia Terracino. The top doubles team of Julia Frattaroli and Stephanie Roman, along with the third doubles tandem of Meaghan Logan and Aimee Alexander also prevailed.

The Nighthawks were edged 4-3 by unbeaten Greenwich on May 31.

Kelly, seeded seventh in the State Open, reached the finals, scheduled for Wednesday (after The Bee sports section went to press).
