Sandy Hook Village Farmers’ Market Opens

Newtown’s local farmers’ markets are a sign that the warm weather and summer months filled with fresh produce have arrived. In Sandy Hook center in the parking lot bordering the Pootatuck River at 5 Glen Road were just a few merchants who set up tables on the first day of the Sandy Hook Village Farmers’ Market on June 3.

Offering a quiet start to what will eventually include entertainment along with goods for sale were booths for Pepe’s Cream of the Crop LLC, selling fresh caught clams, and joining the market for the first time was Andrea’s Bake Shop, which also touted tables filled with treats. Guests with a sweet tooth perused the fresh baked goods dripping with icing and stuffed — in some cases — with chocolate chips.

Welcoming the sign of summer was Pat Trautman, a Washington Avenue resident who said she enjoys walking to the market on Sundays. Visiting Ms Trautman was her daughter Brie Seferian. Helping the two choose a desert was Andrea’s Bake Shop employee Katharine Altieri. The market is open from 9 am to noon on Sundays through August 26 and will include farmers, vendors, and weekly events. For information, call 426-2427.
