The fifth program in the Newtown Authors Reading Series, a collaborative effort between Friends of Newtown Seniors and C.H. Booth Library with funding from CT Humanities, is scheduled for Wednesday, June 21, with LaVerne Blackwell.

The Newtown resident published her “short and easy to read memoir” (John Voket, Newtown Bee) in 2020. My Truths, My Triumphs, My God catches a reader’s attention the minute they begin reading.

Blackwell was born and raised in Richmond, Va. Later in life she met her husband Calvin Blackwell Sr, and they now live in Sandy Hook, where they raised their family.

She is a social worker and an active member of her church and Newtown Friends of Newtown Seniors (FONS).

Registration is required, and copies of My Truths, My Triumphs, My God will be available for the first 20 people to register. Call 203-426-4533 or visit chboothlibrary.org to register.

Advance reading of the book is requested, to better facilitate an interactive discussion.

The June 21 program will continue a series funded in large part by a CT Humanities grant to FONS in late 2022. The Newtown Authors Reading Series will continue monthly to September, with local authors all being featured.

FONS will provide accessible transportation to all Newtown Authors Reading Series events; contact the group at 203-430-0633 or info@FriendsOfNewtownSeniors.org for details or to arrange transportation.

All programs are late Wednesday afternoons, 5 to 7 pm. The series will continue as follows:

July 19: The Slaves of Central Fairfield County by Daniel Cruson, to be presented by his son Ben;

August 16: Home Front: A Memoir from WWII by C.D. Peterson; and

September 20: One God One Goal by John Boccuzzi.

Registration is required for each program, and can be done by calling 203-426-4533 or visiting chboothlibrary.org.

LaVerne Blackwell will continue a collaborative effort between Friends of Newtown Seniors and C.H. Booth Library with funding from CT Humanities when she is the next featured guest of the Newtown Authors Reading Series later this month.
