Sue Kim, daughter of Mr and Mrs Byung Kim of Sandy Hook, graduated from the Academy of Our Lady of Mercy, Lauralton Hall, on June 2. Miss Kim will attend Bowdoin College in the fall. She was the recipient of William J. Moffett Award for leadership and service, Presidentâs Education Award, Connecticut Association of Secondary Schoolâs Award for National Honor Society.
Two students from the area were named to Quinnipiac Universityâs deanâs list for the 2001 spring semester. Monica A. Alpert of Newtown and Jennifer C. Chion of Sandy Hook were named.
Michael P. Giarratano of Newtown graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from the College of Arts and Sciences at Boston College on May 21.
Kathleen Mooney, daughter of James and Adele Mooney of Newtown, recently was named to the deanâs list at Fairfield University. Miss Mooney is majoring in theatre and English literature. She is a member of the Glee Club and Chamber Singers. Miss Mooney is also the business coordinator for Theatre Fairfield.
Ryan Henry, song of J. Robert and Deborah Henry of Newtown, graduated cum laude from Marist College on May 19. Mr Henry received a political science degree. He was inducted into the Omicron Rho Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political honor society.
While attending Marist, Mr Henry was a student senator and a member of the football team. He will be attending Albany School of Law â Union College in the fall.
Brian J. Calderone of Sandy Hook received a bachelor of science in business administration degree in marketing communications, cum laude from Western New England College in May.
Mr Calderone was a member of Delta Mu Delta Honor Society for Business Administration, the honors program, deanâs list, senior class representative in student senate, and served as president, vice president, and secretary of the American Marketing Association.
Lauren Elizabeth Kalb, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ron Kalb of Newtown, received a bachelor of arts degree magna cum laude from Brown University during commencement exercises May 28. Miss Kalb earned a degree in history.
Three Newtown students graduated from St Mary School in Bethel during a graduation ceremony June 8. The students who graduated are Laura Hennessy, Byron McSweeney, and Erin Costa.
Amanda L. Cruz was named to the deanâs list for the second semester at Saint Anselm College, Manchester, New Hampshire. Miss Cruz is a member of the class of 2004 and the daughter of Mr and Mrs Philip J. Cruz of Newtown.
Jamie K. Nielsen of Newtown is a senior finance major at Bryant College and was named to the deanâs list for the spring semester.
Robert Foege will begin medical school at the University of Washington this fall. He is currently a licensed acupuncturist practicing in Seattle. Mr Foege is a 1992 graduate of Vassar College and a 1989 graduate of Newtown High School.
Jessica Schlier, daughter of Brian and Dorothy Schlier of Newtown, received a bachelor of arts degree from Wesleyan University on May 27. Miss Schlier majored in and graduated with high honors in chemistry. She was also the 2001 Silverman Prize recipient for excellence in chemistry.
Charles B. Browne, IV, of Newtown, son of Charlie and Eileen Browne, has graduated from the University of Connecticut at Storrs with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering with concentration in structural engineering. He is a field engineer for the Turner Construction Company.
Cindy Schlier of Newtown has been named to the 2001 spring semester deanâs list at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania. She is a junior majoring in sociology and minoring in both human relations and diversity studies. Miss Schlier is the daughter of Brian and Dorothy Schlier of Newtown.
Alyson L. Nickse, daughter of Jeffrey and Judith Nickse of Newtown, graduated from Colby College May 27 with a degree in biology. Miss Nickse also minored in computer science.
