DWI Checkpoint Planned June 9
Police plan to hold a sobriety checkpoint on the night of Friday, June 9, and early morning hours of Saturday, June 10, to coincide with the graduation of seniors from Newtown High School.
The checkpoint will be conducted at an undisclosed location where all passing vehicles will be stopped to learn if drivers have been drinking alcohol or using drugs, police said.
Police plan to block a selected road and stop vehicles, briefly interviewing drivers to learn whether they are intoxicated. Eight police officers are scheduled to participate.
The sobriety checkpoint is funded by a federal highway safety grant.
Police held a similar checkpoint May 19 to coincide with the junior-senior high school prom. At that checkpoint, police stopped an estimated 400 vehicles. In connection with that checkpoint, two people were charged with driving while intoxicated, 14 other motor vehicle violations were discovered, and a drug seizure was made.
