Relay For Life On-Site Activities

The following is a sample of the on-site activities being held as part of the fifth anniversary 2008 Newtown Relay For Life, being held at Newtown High School, from 5 pm Saturday, June 7, to 5 am, Sunday, June 8:

Scavenger Hunt

This year’s scavenger hunt will be quite the challenge. It will give the kids a chance to meet and greet survivors and caregivers, as well as teach them more about cancer and prevention. Be sure to check it out!

Warm Up & Stretching

Let’s get ready to relay. Come join in on this prerelay stretching and warm up your muscles for the overnight excitement of relaying the night away!

‘Best’ Judging By Survivors

Each tent site will be judged on the following: “Best tent site theme” base on the Olympics, “Best Cancer Awareness” based on information available at that tent site, i.e., information on Early detection for breast cancer, sun exposure, effects of smoking, etc…, “Best Judge’s Bribe” — be creative, our judges like food, donations, and trips! And finally the “Best Team Flag” encompassing the Relay For Life slogan “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back.”

Pop Quiz On Cancer Control For Track Walkers

Throughout the entire relay there will be a “prize patrol” walking the track at random times offering you a chance to win prizes if you get a question correct from the many cancer control trivia questions they will have on hand. So keep your eyes out for them and study up on your ACS and Cancer facts!

Miss Relay Contest

Make sure your male teammates are all primped and prepped for the evening. And don’t let them forget to bring their own purse to collect money. Whichever beautiful lady makes the most money wins the title of Miss Relay!!! The winner of Miss Relay will then be auctioned off during “Walk with a Hero”

‘Walk With A Hero’ Auction

We will be auctioning off local heroes (firefighters, police, EMTs, doctors, “Miss Relay,” and anyone who is a local community hero). The highest bidder will win a walk around the track with their hero. Bring your wallets.

Campfire Sing-Along

Come sing-along to classic hits everyone knows.

Bingo

B-6: Do I hear a Bingo? Join us for some bingo fun and great prizes! Five games for five dollars!

Dance Dance Revolution

Sponsored by the Newtown High School Tech Team, the volunteers responsible for handling much of the logistical prep and production of each year’s Relay For Life.

Movie: Kids’ Choice

The kids will choose from a choice of movies as to what one they want to watch!

Let’s Make A Deal

This game will be a game of chance. You have an opportunity to pick from different unmarked bags with prizes in them or the host will offer you something else instead of opening the bag. Some of the bags contain booby prizes others have great items inside!!!

Prize Patrol For Relayers Walking The Track In The Wee Hours

This will take place during the wee hours to be sure the relayers are still relaying. The prize patrol will go out to the track and whoever has the Most Team Members on the track at one time wins a prize!

Guitar Hero Tournament

You will have to preregister at the Entertainment table for this battle of the fastest guitar player at the relay. Prizes will be awarded to the top players  — $5 chances sold to participate, with proceeds going toward the relay — 16 players will be chosen at random from the entrants to duel to be the 2008 Relay For Life of Newtown Champion.

Frozen T-shirt Contest

Fifty contestants will have a chance to defrost a frozen T-shirt. Whomever defrosts and puts the T-shirt on first wins!!! Advance sign up is required at the relay. To sign up, go to the Entertainment Table.

Morning Yoga

Rejuvenate your body, mind, and soul with a half hour of yoga.

Rooster Crow Contest

Let’s wake those sleeping relayers with a rooster crow contest! Best Crow wins!!!

Fight Back Lap

Be sure to visit the “Fight Back” site at the Registration Tent between the hours of 3 pm and 11 pm. Sign the Fight Back Banner and get your own Fight Back Flag to carry during this lap to signify your commitment to fighting back year round to find a cure for cancer.

Team Flag Lap

The slogan this year for the American Cancer Society is “Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back!” In keeping with the Olympic theme, we would like for all teams to design their own “Team Flag.” We ask each team to try their best to represent this year’s slogan, but to also be as creative as you want. Each team will get to show off their wonderful creation during the Team Flag Lap. Plus you can proudly display your flag at your site for the rest of the night. The flag should be a minimum of 20 by 30 inches. The best team flag will be picked by judges for a prize!

Lucky Olympic Medal Lap

Each time you pass the Entertainment Table you can pick an envelope. If your envelope has a medal inside, you win! pick up your prize at the Entertainment Headquarters table.

Passport Lap

How fast can you visit your Olympic countries in one hour? Receive your passport at 2:30 am at the Entertainment Headquarters prize patrol table. Get your passport stamped each time you complete a lap. The person who travels to the most countries wins a prize!

Crazy Hat Lap

Make sure to have your hat ready to go the night of relay. Be as creative as possible. This will be judged!

Conga Lap

Come on everybody! Let’s do the Conga — grab the person in front of you on the track and conga the lap away! Don’t forget to dress the part; best outfit wins!

Filled With HOPE To Reach A CURE

Four huge jugs will be available that we want to fill to the top with loose change! So empty your pockets and shake out your piggy banks and help us fill up HOPE and CURE jugs.
