After suffering a tough, one-run loss to Jockey Hollow of Monroe (on a run in the bottom of the sixth inning), the Newtown Middle School softball team pounded Danbury Co-Op, 8-3, as Danielle Nicolosi and Kelly Tenney banged out two hits apiece.

The Lady Lions collected nine hits (one of those a home run by Sammie Ciaccia) and took advantage of eight walks. Stacy Broughton, Jacqui Kirol, Joanna Barry (double) and Sam Ross each had a hit.

Nicolosi, Tenney and Barry sparked the defense while Meridith Palo and Katie Schmidt played well behind the plate.

In the loss to Jockey Hollow, Barry was 3-for-3 with two singles and a triple. Kayla Miles, Ciaccia, Tenney, Schmidt, Andrea Rigby, Rachel Nicolosi, Renee Solheim, Melissa Fracker and Broughton all singles to fuel a 12-hit attack.

It was a close game throughout, but the Lady Lions took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run triple by Barry. Jockey Hollow scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead, but the Lady Lions scored twice more in the top of the sixth on singles by Tenney, Rigby, Solheim and Barry.

Jockey Hollow, though, scored once in the bottom of the frame to take lead and then set the Lady Lions down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to capture the win. Broughton pitched a solid game, fanning four people, but was victimized by errors which led to four unearned runs.
