Three Cheers For

Two Fundraisers On One Day

By Kaaren Valenta

On Monday, June 18, two major fundraising events will take place in Newtown, a coincidence that delights Janet Hovious and many of the other organizers.

“We hope people will attend the 12th annual breakfast to benefit Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut, then go on to the Newtown Scholarship Association’s golf tournament,” Ms Hovious said. “This is such a giving town that it can support two such worthwhile projects. I think it is wonderful that we have the opportunity to showcase two wonderful charities.”

The fundraising breakfast of the Newtown Chapter of Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut will be held that morning from 7:30 to 9 at the Fireside Inn. The ninth annual Jack Friel Memorial Golf Scramble, lunch, cocktails, and dinner will be held at Whitney Farms Golf Club in Monroe beginning at 10:15 am to benefit the scholarship fund.

Both events are open to everyone in the community. Persons attending the breakfast do not have to pay for the breakfast but are expected to leave “tips” which are their donations to the fundraiser. The event, the chapter’s main fundraiser of the year, raised just over $15,000 last year. The donations enable Hospice in its mission to provide in-home care and support for persons in the final phases of incurable illnesses.

Both a regular and a lite breakfast will be served. There will be raffle prizes. Kendall Palladino, bereavement/spiritual counselor for Regional Hospice, will be the guest speaker. The Rev Robert Weiss of St Rose Church will give the invocation.

“We want everyone to know that unregistered guests are welcome. There will be room at the tables for you,” Ms Hovious said. “This is a great way to get to know people and to help a wonderful cause.”

Ms Hovious and Marg Studley are co-chairpersons of the breakfast. The committee also includes Marilyn Alexander, Helen Herbold, Pat Hayes, Colleen Honan, Ellyn Gehrett, Sara Carnrick, Shirley Johnson, Erin Quinlan, Pat and Ken Stroud, Marie Sturdevant, and Barbara Webb.

Anyone who is interested in sponsoring a table, or who wants more information, should call 270-1960 or 426-3651.

Newtown Savings Bank is the sponsor for the NSA golf tournament, which this year is honoring Judge William J. Lavery, Jr, a longtime former member of the NSA board. Check-in, registration, and warm-up will take place from 10:15 am until the 11:30 am tee-off.

This year’s goal is to raise more than $25,000 for student scholarships.

The entry fee for the golf tournament is $150 per person, which includes lunch, cocktails, and buffet dinner. It is $50 to attend the dinner only. Donations also are welcome. These include $150 for hole sponsors, whose names will be displayed on signs at the holes; $200 for special location sponsors at the first tee and official scoreboard; and items to be awarded as a prize or in the raffle.

Team handicaps will be used and many prizes will be awarded, including low gross and low net scores. Registration and payment may be mailed to the Newtown Scholarship Association, c/o Barbara Borst, PO Box 302, Newtown 06470. Checks should be made payable to the Newtown Scholarship Association.

For more information about the golf tournament contact Mark Fries at 426-8507, Jim Morley at 426-8966, or Bob Murray at 426-1100.

The golf course is at 175 Shelton Road (Route 111) in Monroe. Soft spikes are required.
