Last Museum Open House Of The Season
Last Museum Open House Of The Season
The last Matthew Curtis House-Museum open house before summer break will take place Sunday, June 10, from 1 to 4 pm. The Eighteenth Century Curtiss House is located at 44 Main Street, and is the headquarters of the Newtown Historical Society. The public is invited to the open house, which is free of charge. Complimentary refreshments will be offered.
The Curtiss House, Newtownâs only museum, presents guests with a glimpse back to early life in rural Newtown, a time when life may have been simpler, but certainly not easier for our forefathers. Guides in costume offer guests informative tours of the house-museum, which features period room settings including furnishings of the time mixed with items of later date that help tell the story of Newtown. Rooms suggest the way family possessions could have been added as one generation followed another. Recent significant furniture acquisitions are on display including several items attributed to early Newtown craftsmen.
Town Historian Dan Cruson will be on hand from 2 to 3 pm to personally autograph copies of his books, which include Images of America: Newtown, Newtownâs Slaves, Prehistory of Fairfield County, and his newest, Educating Newtownâs Children. All Newtown Historical Society publications will be offered for sale throughout the day.
