Newtown Memorial Day Kick-Off Tournament

Newtown Breeze 1, Easton-Redding 0: Jessica Maturo scored the only goal of the game to give Newtown the win in its first outing of the tournament. Cecilia Schoeni and Cassidy Kortze were key to the offensive effort, while Ashley Santore and Erin Tressler led the team defensively. Natalie Kelchner recorded the shutout in goal.

Newtown Breeze 5, Brookfield 1: Newtown’s Marcella Daily led all scorers with back-to-back goals early in the first half. Rounding out the offense were Samantha Crespo, Mary Hufziger, and Cecilia Schoeni each with one goal. Sarah Houle and Jacklin Gouveia kept Brookfield in check defensively.

Wilton Blue 3, Newtown Breeze 0: In a tough match against Wilton, Newtown relied on the efforts of Maggie Beardsley, Savannah Mather, and Natalie Kelchner at both ends of the field. Though the Breeze couldn’t connect for any goals in the game, Samantha Crespo, Marcella Daily and Ashley Santore kept the pressure on Wilton offensively. On defense, Jacklin Gouveia and Erin Tressler were key, while Jessica Maturo played tough in goal.

Newtown Breeze 2, Danbury Heat 2: Sarah Houle and Mary Hufziger each scored one goal for Newtown. Cassie Kortze, Savannah Mather and Maggie Beardsley moved the ball well for the Breeze, keeping the pressure on Danbury throughout the game.

Newtown Thistle 2, Southbury 1: Mia Katsuleres dribbled down the field around several Southbury players to score for Newtown. Emily Neave had some breakaways and put in a goal for Newtown.  Brianna MacDonald made great saves in the goal, especially on one incredibly hard shot in the second half to save the lead. Brianna Lutz repeatedly took on  Southbury players to cut off  breakaway scoring opportunities by the opposing team.

Newtown Thistle 0, Oxford 0: Chloe Rogalin kept up the pressure at midfield throughout the game.  Ashling Sugarman and Alessandra Manfredi had some strong shots on goal. Stephanie Carr dribbled through the Oxford defense and made strong shots and passes.

Watertown 2, Newtown Thistle 0: Julia Sughrue made skillful passes to advance the ball at midfield.  Emily Montoya played hard on defense and made an exceptional save in the second half. Allessandra Manfredi continued to hustle and played a great game at center midfield.

Waterbury 3, Newtown Thistle 1: Kendra Dunnigan scored a goal off a rebound from a shot by Stephanie Carr. Ashling Sugarman was a standout at forward. Claire Beiter was tenacious at midfield.  Mia Katsuleres controlled the ball at left midfield and made outstanding crosses for Newtown.

Chatterboxes 5, Rockets 1: The Chatterboxes were fueled by Emily Grimes’ 3 goals and Jamie Duncan’s 3 assists. Sierra Mather had 2 goals and Alex Dittrich had an assist. Renee Henriques and Margot Elkins led the defense as Marissa Liberante and Amanda Donovan commanded the midfield. Emily Jerris scored the Rockets’ goal. Briana Alves and Lexy Badick wer strong on defense and good overall games were turned in by Kelly Coughlin, Danielle Scarpa and Callen Rafferty.
