One NHS Student Charged With Alcohol Possession

Police said they conducted a “K-9 sniff/lockdown drill” on Friday, May 28, at Newtown High School during which they charged one student with an alcohol violation.

The Newtown police dog was assisted by police dogs from Brookfield, Ridgefield, and Middlebury, according to Newtown police.

During the event, the police dogs were allowed to walk through the school parking lot with their handlers in seeking to detect contraband within parked vehicles through the dogs’ keen sense of smell. During such exercises, students are kept within the school.

Police said they charged male student Tory Deakin, 18, of 1 Academy Lane with the possession of alcohol by a minor after alcohol was found inside the unspecified vehicle that he had driven to school.

That infraction carries a $136 fine.

Police conduct such exercises with the cooperation of school officials.
