Newtown Savings Bank Burglarized Through Roof

Police report that a burglar or burglars were able to enter the Newtown Savings Bankâs branch office at Sand Hill Plaza when it was closed for business last weekend by cutting a hole through the bankâs roof.
Police said they received a call from the bank at 228 South Main Street at 8:54 am on Saturday, May 29, explaining that the bank had been burglarized. Police said it is unclear if one or more burglars entered the bank through the hole in the roof.
The hole in the roof was cut above the small windowless room situated directly behind the bankâs automatic teller machine (ATM), which is positioned inside the bankâs vestibule, according to police.
The intruder or intruders were not able to open up the ATM to get money out of the device, police said.
Police said that two burglar alarms originated from the bank during the early morning hours of May 29. One burglar alarm came in at 1:02 am, and the second alarm came in at 6 am, according to police. In each case, police responded to the bank and checked the premises. They looked into the building but did not see anyone inside. The burglar or burglars may have been inside the windowless room.
In each case, police contacted the bankâs âkey-holderâ in seeking to gain entry to the bank to check the premises, but that person did not come to the bank with the door key to the business, police said. Consequently, police were not able to enter the bank to check for problems.
Bank spokesman James Cotter said the bank has no comment on the incident, noting that the burglary is the subject of an âongoing investigation.â
Police ask anyone with information on the bank burglary to contact Detective Daniel McAnaspie at the police station at 203-426-5841.
