Newtown Brothers Donate Funds For Restoration In Haiti
By Eliza Hallabeck
Newtown brothers raised $950 to help fund the restoration effort in Haiti through a tag sale effort in New York.
After weeks of preparation, brothers Nathan and Joshua Malota, a fifth grader and a second grader, sold goods collected from the area in the annual Stormville Airport Ultimate Yard Sale, on Saturday May 8.
The boys then presented the money the raised through the effort to Deacon Chuck Dietsch of the Sacred Heart Church in Southbury on May 26.
Nathan told The Bee he and his brother wanted to do something to help the restoration effort in Haiti, after an earthquake devastated the area in January.
After holding a collection day at Newtown Middle School in April, Nathan and Joshua spent time after school going through the donated items, separating them and pricing them.
The tag sale event came together with the help of Nathanâs mother, Jeanne Malota, who is an event planner and owner of JMM Events. Ms Malota suggested holding a tag sale, and Nathan said he thought it was a great idea. Joshua, a second grade student, said he wanted to help his brother with the project.
All of the proceeds from the tag sale will be going to the Haitian Ministries through Deacon Dietsch, who the boys said travels to Haiti frequently. Nathan also said the deacon was in Haiti in January, and was trapped under rubble during the earthquake.
According to Ms Malota, the boys were able to choose where the money will be going. They decided to give half of the money to the Madame Samsonâs Neighborhood Meal Program. Thanks to the $950 donation, the program will be able to feed approximately 70 children for two weeks.
The other half of the money will be going to the Tierney Tobin Scholarship Fund. Thanks to the boysâ donation, the program will be able to send approximately 1.5 children to a private school.
The Malota Family would like to thank all those who donated items for the tag sale.
âThe sale would not have been a success without the generosity of all who helped,â Ms Malota said by email this week.
