Boys Strike For Victory At Tournament
The Newtown Strikers won the boysâ U12 Division of the Newtown Kick-off Tournament, winning all four games in their bracket to capture the championship. Newtown posted a 6-0 score against Ridgefield Black in its first outing. Newtown received goals from Albert Dean, James Carney, Spencer Tolson, and a hat trick from Josh Houle. Assisting offensively were Cole Rogalin and Jacob Harper, while the defensive team of Alex Gerbo, Paul OâLeary, and John Carlson kept Ridgefield scoreless.
Newtown avenged an earlier season loss to the Stamford Hurricanes by beating Stamford 2-1 in the second game of the tournament. Albert Dean, who played well throughout the tournament, scored the first goal of town. Robby Schreiber, Scott Martin, and Liam McNichols worked the ball exceptionally well, frustrating Stamfordâs offensive line throughout the game, while Cole Rogalin was outstanding in goal, blocking several key shots on goal.
Newtown again kept its opponent scoreless in the 5-0 semifinal match against the Monroe Hurricanes. Behind the defensive efforts of Paul OâLeary and Alex Gerbo, goalkeepers Cole Rogalin and Zachary Laros were able to shut out Monroe. On the offensive side, Blake Jarvis was everywhere, scoring three goals for Newtown, while James Carney and Jacob Harper each netted one.
Newtown beat New Fairfield United 6-1 in the finals of the tournament. James Carney led all scorers with two goals, while Josh Houle, Spencer Tolson, Blake Jarvis, and Cole Rogalin each scored one for the Strikers. John Carlson and Liam McNichols consistently moved the ball well for Newtown, while defensively the team of Robby Schreiber, Paul OâLeary, and goalkeeper Zachary Laros limited Monroe to one goal.
