‘ARCHITECTURE OF GEE’S BEND QUILTS’ AT WALTERS ART MUSEUM JUNE 15

AVV 12-19 #681527

BALTIMORE, MD. — “Gee’s Bend: The Architecture of The Quilt” will be on view at The Walters Art Museum June 15–August 26.

Organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, this exhibition features 70 brilliant and dynamic quilts that are as much reminiscent of abstract paintings as of traditional American quilts. This exhibition will explore the impact of architecture, environment and traditional quilting motifs and examine the basic structural patterns that appear to form the foundation of Gee’s Bend quiltmaking.

The group of 45 women who created these quilts spans four generations of the isolated, all-black community of Gee’s Bend, Ala., and the exhibition will provide a look at the work of these Twentieth Century artists. Like many American quilters, they transformed necessity-providing staples for their family into works of art that are bold and innovative in their design. “The Architecture of Gee’s Bend Quilts” will demonstrate that the traditions of quiltmaking in Gee’s Bend run deeply and extend through generations.

The Walters Art Museum is at 600 North Charles Street. For information, 410-547-9000 or www.thewalters.org.
