Seminar On Farmland Preservation

Litchfield — A seminar titled “Growing For Success: Building Partnerships between Farmers, Land Trusts & Communities” will be presented at the White Memorial Conservation Center Carriage House, Wednesday, June 16, from 6:30 to 9 pm.

Farms without farmers are just open space. This seminar will explore examples of towns and land trusts that are successfully protecting farmland and fostering agriculture. It will include discussions of how easements can be written to encourage farming. And it will address the challenges land trusts and towns face in managing their protected farmland.

“Growing for Success” is a joint production of the American Farmland Trust, the Connecticut Farmland Trust, the Connecticut Farm Bureau Association, the Litchfield County Farm Bureau, the Northwest Conservation District, and the Weantinoge Heritage, Inc.

It will feature a series of presentations by well-known farmland preservationists including Mark Zenick, executive director, Franklin Land Trust; Rollin Hannan, farmer, working with the Southbury Land Trust; Harry White, ecologist, Weantinoge Heritage Land Trust; and Phil Chester, town planner, Suffield.

The seminar is free, but reservations are required. For more information about the seminar, or to make reservations, call the Farm Bureau at 860-567-9019, or toll free at 866-733-4365, or send email to LCFB@optonline.net.
