NHS Staff And Students Shoot Hoops For Troops
Newtown High School students and faculty members participated in a Hoops for Troops Student vs Faculty Basketball Game in the schoolâs gymnasium on Friday, May 20.
The NHS Peer Leadership group organized the game to benefit the Wounded Warriors Project. The Wounded Warriors Project assists and provides support to returning service personnel from Afghanistan and Iraq.
More than 50 students, representing various clubs and sports teams throughout the school, comprised several teams and played against 15 teachers who rotated a lineup of five players throughout the event.
The teachers won the game 119-117, but, most importantly, more than $400 was raised through the event.
After the first quarter, Brian Bailey, a third grader at Sandy Hook School in attendance at the game, won a gift card for winning the foul shooting contest. After the second quarter many participated in the half court shot contest. After the third quarter $40 was given out in a 50/50 raffle.
Participants thanked the cheerleaders who cheered everyone on, the pep band for providing great music, the student singers who sang the national anthem, FJS Industries and My Place for their donations, Ian Kirner and Greg Frattaroli for officiating the game, Mike Scalzo and Brendan Gonzalez for running the scorerâs table, and NTV for taping the game.
