Womanâs Club Shines At GFWC Convention
Members of the Newtown Womanâs Club, GFWC, participated in the arts and crafts contest sponsored by the General Federation of Womenâs Clubs of Connecticut at the 108th convention held at the Sheraton in East Hartford on May 7. Clubwomen from throughout the state entered 300 items in the contest.
First-place winners were Mary Elander for paper cutting; Flo Charon, theorem painting; Marianne Scanlon, flowers; Marilyn Alexander, crochet; Peg Forbell, knitting and sewing; Marion Thompson, knitting; Ruth Campbell, needlework, and Betty Doty, sewing.
Second-place awards were given to Marilyn Alexander, knitting and scrapbook; Coke Cramer, photography; and Pat Denlinger, photography.
Third place went to Evelyn Spera, oil painting, and Marion Thompson, stationery.
In addition to the arts and crafts awards, the winner of the State Literature award was announced. Newtown Womanâs Club member Liz Arneth won the awards for both short story and for poetry. Both manuscripts will be entered in the GFWC national competition in which winners from each state will compete for the National GFWC Literature Award.
