On a (finally) glorious weekend, the Newtown Strikers (Boys U12) and Newtown Power (Girls U11) captured championships at the annual Memorial Day Kick-Off Soccer Tournament sponsored by the Newtown Soccer Club.

On a (finally) glorious weekend, the Newtown Strikers (Boys U12) and Newtown Power (Girls U11) captured championships at the annual Memorial Day Kick-Off Soccer Tournament sponsored by the Newtown Soccer Club.

The Strikers defeated Ridgefield (5-0), Stamford (2-0), Monroe (5-1) and Wilton (1-0) on their way to the title while the Power defeated Southbury (3-1), tied Danbury (1-1), and beat Stamford (4-3) and Terryville (3-1) on the way to their title.

Meanwhile, the Newtown Hurricanes (Girls U14) finished second.

Here are the results –

Boys U12

Strikers 5, Ridgefield 0 – Kyle Moore scored twice and Daniel Lynch, Eric Thornberg and Ishan Tatake added one apiece. Michael Carrafiello and Josh Engler provided assists. Strong offensive pressure applied by Alex Miller and Daniel Hufziger. Kyle Wildman shut out Ridgefield in the goal!

Strikers 2, Stamford 0 – Daniel Lynch and Eric Thornberg scored the goals to lift the Strikers to the win. Strong offensive pressure led by Ryan Pasko and Kyle Wildman while good defensive support came from Tony Vacaro, Max Brazo and Michael Gould. Ishan Tatake shut out Stamford in the goal.

Strikers 5, Monroe 1 – Kyle Moore and Daniel Lynch each scored a pair of goals and Aaron Nezvesky added a solo to lead the Strikers. Moore, Eric Thornberg and Lynch provided assists. Tony Vacaro and Josh Engler played well on defense while Alex Miller made strong offensive plays.

Strikers 1, Wilton Blue 0 – Aaron Nezvesky had the lone goal that clinched the win in the Memorial Day Tournament. Michael Gould, Max Brazo and Tony Vacaro supported the team well in defense while Daniel Hufziger, Michael Carrafiello and Ryan Pasko played well. Ishan Tatake did an outstanding job in the goal.

Girls U11

Power 3, Southbury 1 – After an hour-long rain delay, Leah Barrett scored three goals on assists from Cristina Naldini, Molly Mahony and Ali Korchman. Abbie Keough and Brooke Leifels played well at defense. Kendall Svanda was superb at goal.

Power 1, Danbury 1 – Ali Korchman had Newtown’s lone goal on an assist from Ale Fuentes. Nora Murphy and Nicole Davis gave it their all up front for Newtown as did Christina Caporale at midfield. Kendall Svanda anchored the goalkeeping position.

Power 4. Stamford 3 – It was a thriller. Stamford scored within thirty seconds of the start of the game and five minutes later Meaghan Carney buried one into the net for Newtown. But Stamford came back with two more goals and by the end of the half Newtown was behind 3-1. Still, the Power never gave up. On a penalty kick from 25 yards out, Maddy Keane cleared the defensive wall and beat the goalie with a picture perfect shot into the upper right hand corner of the net. With 10 minutes left, Ali Fuentes tied the game with a heads up run and solid goal. And with less than five minutes left in the game Maddy Keane lobbed a shot over the goaltender’s head for the win. Ali Korchman, Jessica Jowdy and Meaghan Carney and Kelley Gaston all provided assists while Katherine Scott and Cassie Fallon played exceptional at defense. Kendall Svanda had numerous saves.

Power 3, Terryville 1 – Maddy Keane had two goals and Ali Fuentes had one to lead the Power to the win and the division title. Kelley Gaston and Jessica Jowdy had assists. Nora Murphy and Molly Mahony played well at forward. Meaghan Carney and Ali Korchman played tough at midfield. Cristina Naldini, Abbie Keough and Leah Barrett played smart defense and Kendall Svanda played heads-up goal.

Girls U14

Ridgefield 1, Hurricanes 0 – Ridgefield scored the lone goal off a deflection. Strong performances were turned in by defenders Jen Brewer, Cara Colacurcio, Adelle Cerreta and Natalie Villa.

Hurricanes 1, Shelton 0 – Haley Keane scored off a cross from Sarah Shannon to lift the Hurricanes to the win. Goalie Emily Kluga recorded her first of two shut outs in the tournament. Cassie David and Sarah Feinstein provided offensive pressure all game.

Hurricanes 1, Trumbull 1 – Newtown got an early goal from Kelley Sullivan off an assist from Emily Weber and controlled play for most of the game. A late offensive surge by Trumbull tied the game with only four minutes to play. Newtown rallied offensively thanks to fine play by Erin Nemeth but the game ended in a draw.

Hurricanes 2, Terryville 0 – Newtown saved their strongest performance for the final game and earned a second place finish in the tournament. Sarah Shannon registered a goal and an assist and Danielle Norris added a goal. Kelley Anne Carney and Colleen Lynch turned in strong performances all tournament long.

Boys U13

Easton 2, Newtown 0 – Andy Lapple and Ben Miles played excellent defense while Chris McCann and Matt Baier had an great game at midfield.

Danbury 5, Newtown 2 – Matt Slattery and Dan Greenwood played well on defense while Eric Keogler and Collin Jacob controlled the midfield. Nahba Bropleh and Adam Buccino each scored a goal.

New Haven 1, Newtown 0 – Gene Kallivrousis and Matt Slattery had a great defensive game.

Newtown 4, Terryville 1 – Danny Clement and Adam Buccino scored a goal a piece while Xjulio Halili contributed two goals. Matt Iassogna played excellent offense.

Boys U11

Crusaders 2, Easton 1 – Andre Capozziello and John Imbimbo each scored with offensive support from Sean Burson and Chris McGowan. Adam Ellison was a force in midfield and Travis LeBlanc was tough on defense. Jason Marks was solid in the net.

Monroe 3, Crusaders 1 – Adam Ellison scored the only goal. Conrad Normann and Sean Burson were tough on offense. Hank Helgren was tough in mid. Justin Brophy and Josh Barrett were a defensive force.

Stamford 3, Crusaders 2 – Ryan Dunnigan scored the first goal. Conrad Normann followed with a second off a beautiful cross by Hank Helgren. Austin Puleri aided in the offensive push while Travis LeBlanc and Justin Brophy were tough on defense.

Crusaders 1, Fairfield 1 – Andre Capozziello scored the only goal with great support from Chris McGowan. The midfield kept the pressure on with help from Ryan Dunnigan and John Imbimbo. Dan Gallagher and Greg Campbell were tough on defense and Austin Puleri was awesome in the net.

Girls U10

The Newtown Flash had a tough weekend with two games on Saturday and three games on Sunday, and although they fought hard they only scored twice – once in a 1-0 win over Redding on Sunday. The Flash lost to Westport (2-1), tied Wilton (0-0) and Darien (0-0), and lost to Bethel (1-0).

In the win over Redding, Kristiana Engler scored the lone goal.
