Newtown High School Lists Available Scholarships

The Guidance Office at Newtown High School currently has information and applications for the following scholarships:

Ackinson Scholarship — This scholarship for $1,750 is open to students in grades 11 and 12 who plan to enroll in a college, university, or any other postsecondary institution. Students must submit a short answer (fewer than 1,000 words) to the question, “Where do you see yourself five years after attaining your desired postsecondary education?” The question will periodically change to help differentiate potential candidates. Answers may be emailed to Ackinson Consulting at scholarship@ackinson.com. Interested students should go to www.ackinson/com/scholarships.htm for more information. The deadline for submissions is September 25.

Stamford Symphony Orchestra Scholarship Competition — High school seniors during the coming year (2005-2006) from Connecticut are eligible to compete for this music performance scholarship award program. The first place prize is a $5,000 scholarship renewable for four years and second place is a $1,000 renewable scholarship. Applicants must intend to apply as music performance majors to accredited conservatories, colleges, or universities. Applications are can be downloaded from www.stamfordsymphony.org and must be received by the symphony by September 26.

National Federation of the Blind of CT Academic Scholarships — Four scholarship awards with a combined total of $15,000 are available to high school students who are ready for postsecondary study. Applicants must be (a) legally blind (b) a Connecticut resident or attending school in Connecticut, and (c) must be enrolled in a full-time program. Completed applications must be submitted by September 15. Recipients will be notified by mid-October. Additional details are available at www.nfbct.org. Applications are in the Career Center.

Connecticut Student Loan Foundation — This organization will award 20 students with scholarships of $1,000 each as part of this new scholarship program. It is open to all high school seniors and first-year college students who will attend an accredited college or trade school in the 2005-2006 academic year. Interested students should get information from www.cslf.com/scholarship.

Horatio Alger Association Scholarship — A national scholarship program that provides financial assistance ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 to students who have financial need and have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. Scholarship criteria include graduation in the spring/summer of 2006, commitment to pursuing a bachelor’s degree and US citizenship. Students may apply online at www.horatioalger.com/scholarships beginning now through October 15.

Presidential Freedom Scholarships — A $1,000 national scholarship program for high school juniors and seniors who have demonstrated outstanding service to the community. Newtown High School can nominate two students. If selected, $500 is awarded through the Corporation for National and Community Service and $500 is matched by a local organizations. Interested students should go to www.cns.gov/scholarships for information or the Career Center for an application. Submit applications to the Career Center by June 10.

Berny Klaus Memorial Scholarship — Mutual Security Credit Union will offer three individual $1,000 scholarships to three high school seniors with outstanding promise attending school in Fairfield or Litchfield County. Applicants must be a MSCU member or the child of a member. Scholarships will be awarded to students who are in good academic standing, have demonstrated financial need, and have given selflessly of themselves to improve the overall state of affairs in their community. Applications are due by June 30.

Winning Characteristics National Scholarship — seniors are eligible for one of five one-time $1,000 scholarship awards through participation in the Making College Count program at their high school. The program focuses on seven winning characteristics: communication skills, organization, leadership, logic, effort, group skills, and entrepreneurship. Interested applicants should go to www.makingitcount.com/scholarship from January to June 2005 for more details.
