Pack 270 Rewards Scouts For A Year Of Effort And Fun
Middle Gate Elementary Schoolâs Cub Scout Pack 270 leaders spent last Thursday night giving awards to many scouts who had completed achievements and electives over the past several months. Achievements, required to be completed by all scouts to earn their rank, were given to both Tiger and Wolf Scouts.
Tiger, the first year of scouting preceding Cub Scouts, is earned by completing five achievements divided into Home, Den, and âGo See Itâ activities. Home activities are typically performed with the family. Den activities are completed during meetings where a smaller group of Tiger Cubs who work together. âGo See Itâ activities involve a trip to a local firehouse, business, or other organization to learn what function the group serves in society.
To earn Wolf, the second rank in Cub Scouts after Bobcat, each boy must complete 58 achievements out of a possible 74. Most Wolf requirements are completed at home. The Den leader keeps track of the progress of his scouts. Dens that earned the Wolf badge this month are Dens 8, 9, and 11. Wolf electives are rewarded with gold and silver arrow points. Each scout gets one arrow point for every ten electives he completes. Among 11 boys, 43 arrow points were awarded.
The Webelos program, based on 20 activities, follows Cub Scouts. Boys bring to den meetings projects they worked on at home to show others, as well as to be approved by the den leader. Webelos Den 1 members received their Athlete and Handyman awards. Den 6 completed its âLeave No Trace Awardâ which teaches scouts about six principles practiced outdoors to minimize their impact on nature. Finally, Den 11 earned its World Conservation Award by completing the âSharing Your World with Wildlifeâ requirement along with electives in Weather, Crafts, and Water & Soil Conservation.
âI do not remember giving out so many awards at one time to so many scouts.â said Jeff Timmons, Cub Master of Pack 270. âThe boys worked enthusiastically, they had fun and best of all they learned about the community, science, and other interests.â
