Newtown Honors Those Who Made The Ultimate Sacrifice

A moment of solemn prayer and patriotic remembrance again marked services at the Newtown VFW Post 308 Memorial Day ceremony Monday at 11 am. Emceeing the morning was post member Don Monckton, who introduced dignitaries including First Selectman Herb Rosenthal and State Representative Julia Wasserman.

The warm day saw a gathering of veterans and supporters huddled both in the shade and sitting in the sun in front of the podium and beside the traditional cross topped with a helmet and commemorative red, white, and blue wreath. Mr Rosenthal spoke briefly of those who died in service to this country.

“They gave their lives and never did come back,” he said.

Further recognizing those the day honors, Mr Monckton reminded the audience that, “They died for our right to be free. Remember them. Live for them.”

As Post Commander Ernest “Junie” Ingram, Ladies Auxiliary Jr Vice President Evelyn Urban, and others approached the memorial wreath with mementos, he continued, “We pay our respects to our comrades.”

The wreath is “a symbol of remembrance,” he said, and our flag “has glorious colors that shall wave over them in death as it did in life.”
