Kids’ Adventure Club At Flanders

WOODBURY – On Saturday, June 10, from 10 am until noon, children ages 3 through 10 are invited to Flanders Nature Center & Land Trust for a “Kids Adventure Club” program called “Farming Friends.”

Participants will first hike to the North Barn, where they will visit the baby animals born in the spring at Flanders – a new calf, baby bunnies and chicks. They will also see the other animals at the barn, saying Hello to a the donkey, horse, pigs, chickens, turkeys and rabbits.

There will be stories about these varied creatures, kids will learn what they like to eat, and learn what chores they would have to perform if they lived  on a farm. Children will tour the antique tool museum, next door to the North Barn, where they will view 100-year-old farm implements and learn the history of farming in Connecticut.

Life for the farmer a century ago was so very different and more difficult without motorized equipment. Children will discover that everything was done by sheer manpower with the help of farm animals.

After a craft, children will be taken on a hayride where “Harold” the tractor will tow their wagon over the fields and trails of Flanders’ beautiful acres, pass some bluebird houses and other animal habitats, and perhaps see a beaver or two at the pond.

Registration can be done by calling Flanders at 203-263-2711, extension 10.

The fee for the program is $12 for members and $15 for nonmembers.  Children should bring along a snack for this program and be prepared for lots of outdoor activities.

Flanders is also continuing to accept registrations for its Summer Series program which start Monday, June 26.  Details  are available online at FlanderNatureCenter.org.
