Restricted Turn

Daniel J. Capron, 25, of New Milford, operating a 2017 Ford Escape SE, was traveling southbound on Hawleyville Road around 7:24 am, Wednesday, April 21.

Matheus F. Vilasboas-Silva, 24, of Oxford, was traveling northbound in the same area, operating a 2012 Subaru Forester.

Capron attempted to his vehicle left into the parking lot of 26 Hawleyville Road (Mitchell Gas Station) and failed to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic.

As a result the vehicles collided, causing disabling damage to the front and passenger side of the Escape and the front end of the Forester.

No injuries were reported. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Capron was issued an infraction for making a restricted turn.

Verbal Warning

Newtown police report Madison A. Benson, 17, of Sandy Hook was operating a 2003 Subaru Forester 2.5 XS northbound on High Rock Road around 11:10 am, Saturday, May 15. While negotiating a curve near Grays Plain Road, Benson oversteered and the Subaru traveled off the roadway.

The Subaru struck rocks, first on its front right side and then on its front left, coming to rest off the roadway in front of trees and rocks.

The vehicle sustained disabling damage and was towed from the scene.

Benson was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

She was given a verbal warning for failure to keep right on a curve.

Failure To Obey Stop Sign

A 2013 Nissan Altima being operated by Latisha C. Douglas, 42, of Stroudsburg, Penn., was entering the intersection of Currituck, Obtuse, and Hawleyville roads from Obtuse Road around 10:31 pm, Saturday, May 15.

At the same time, a 2020 Chevrolet Equinox LT being operated by George P. Rose, 57, of Brookfield, was entering the intersection from Currituck Road.

When the Altima failed to stop for the posted stop sign, its front end struck the front passenger side of the Equinox.

There were no injuries to either driver nor to any of their passengers. All were wearing seat belts, according to the police report.

Douglas was issued a verbal warning for failure to obey stop sign.

Two Vehicle Collision

A 2014 BMW 535XI operated by Anthony Bacarella, 33, of Monroe, was traveling northbound on Main Street near Currituck Road around 10:48 am, Wednesday, May 19.

A 2011 Subaru Forester 2.5x Limited operated by Sophie Wolfman, 20, of Newtown, was traveling southbound on Currituck Road at the clearly posted stop sign at the intersection of Main Street, according to the police report.

Wolfman attempted to turn south onto Main Street and entered into the northbound travel lane of Main Street when it was unsafe to do so. The front left corner of the BMW struck the left side of the Forester.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts. No injuries were reported.

Wolfman was issued a written warning for failure to obey a stop sign.

Warrant Arrest

On Wednesday, May 19, at approximately 4:10 pm, Edgar Mora, 44, of Norwalk, went to Newtown Police Department to turn himself in on an active arrest warrant stemming from an incident that occurred on July 12, 2020.

Mora was placed under arrest, charged with issuing a bad check for more than $2,000, and processed. He was released on a written promise to appear and given a court date of June 2 at Danbury Superior Court.

Failure To Obey Stop Sign

Newtown police report Muadh A. Bhavnagarwala, 20, of Newtown, was operating a 1998 Toyota Camry eastbound on Deep Brook Road around 7:38 pm, Thursday, May 20.

At the same time, Gregory T. Oliger, 60, of Newtown, was operating a 2012 Ford F-350 Super Duty south on Brushy Hill Road, approaching the intersection with Deep Brook.

Bhavnagarwala did not stop at the posted stop sign on Deep Brook Road. The Camry entered the intersection with Brushy Hill Road and struck the passenger side front bumper of Ford.

No injuries were reported to either driver, nor to the two passengers in the vehicle with Bhavnagarwala. All were wearing seat belts, according to the police report.

Bhavnagarwala was given a verbal warning for failure to obey a stop sign.

Six Charges In Arrest

Newtown police performed a traffic stop on Berkshire Road on Friday, May 21, after observing traffic violations, including the wrong plates being affixed to the car.

Subsequent investigation led to the discovery that the operator of the vehicle, Jauwan Edwards, 23, of Shelton, was in possession of approximately one ounce of suspected fentanyl/heroin along with marijuana and oxycodone.

The vehicle was also uninsured and unregistered, and Edwards did not have a driver’s license.

Edwards was arrested and charged with possession with intent to sell, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, misuse of plates, operation without insurance, and operation without a license.

He was later released after posting $25,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Danbury Court on June 3 for the charges.

Graffiti Vandalism

Newtown police officers responded around 11:30 am, Friday, May 21, to the commercial property at 14 Prospect Drive for reported vandalism.

The vandalism was graffiti and is similar to vandalism in other areas of town. The vandalism on Prospect Drive is believed to have occurred between 2 pm, Wednesday, May 19, and 9 am, May 21.

Following Too Closely

Around 5:45 pm, Friday, May 21, a 2011 Jeep Patriot operated by Jordan Conrad, 18, of Newtown, traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road, was stopped at the intersection with Walnut Tree Hill Road.

A 2016 Chevrolet Suburban K1500 operated by Denise Romano, 52, of Sandy Hook, was traveling behind the Jeep.

After the Jeep stopped, the Suburban moved forward and struck the rear bumper of the Jeep at a slow rate of speed.

No injuries were reported. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Romano was issued a verbal warning for following too close.

Two-Vehicle Interstate Crash

Three people from two vehicles were taken to the hospital after a crash on I-84 East, Saturday afternoon, May 22.

Connecticut State Police report a 2010 Ford Escape being operated by Alexander E. Kuhr, 21, of Plantsville, was braking for traffic in the high-speed lane just prior to Exit 11, around 2:33 pm. A 2017 BMW X5 Xdrive35i behind the Ford, being operated by Zhongqiu Zhang, 55, of Middlebury, did not stop in time.

The BMW struck the rear of the Ford, which in turn was pushed forward and into metal guide rails along the northern side of the highway.

Kuhr, a passenger in the Escape, and a passenger in the BMW were all taken to the hospital. Both drivers and both passengers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. The BMW’s air bags deployed. Air bags in the Ford did not deploy.

Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, an ambulance from Nuvance, and two paramedics also responded to the crash.

Both vehicles were towed due to disabling damage.

Troopers determined Zhang was at fault for the collision, and he was issued an infraction for following too close resulting in a collision.

Unknown Cause Or Fault

Newtown police were contacted around 3:38 pm, Saturday, May 22, when the owner of a Honda thought his vehicle had been scratched by another vehicle.

A 2006 Subaru and a 2020 Honda (no model given) were parked unoccupied at Ferris Acres Creamery on Sugar Street. The parking lot was filled and the lot was very busy, with vehicles traveling through and people walking to and from their vehicles.

Donald A. Cohen, 31, of Bronx, N.Y., stated when he arrived back to the Honda after getting ice cream he observed some markings on the driver’s side door. He said markings were not there when he left the Honda parked in a designated space.

Cohen told police he observed the Impreza parked unoccupied in the designated space alongside the Honda.

Cohen stated he observed markings on the Subaru and that he was advised from a third party when asked if they were fresh markings.

Thomas J. Kroot, 25, of Bethel arrived back at the Subaru and was questioned by Cohen.

Kroot stated he parked the Subaru in a designated parking space and left to get ice cream. He returned to find Cohen by both vehicles.

Police checked the Honda and were unable to see markings on the side door. Cohen told police he removed some of the markings prior to their arrival.

The Subaru reportedly had multiple markings all over the vehicle.

Police were unable to determine who, if anyone, was at fault.

Found Keys

A set of keys was turned in to Newtown Police Department, 191 Main Street South, around 6:30 pm, Sunday, May 23.

The keychain contains 22 keys and includes a tag that says “Back Office Desk.”

Verbal Warnings For Both Drivers

Newtown police report Daniel J. Wood, 19, of New Milford, operating a 2007 Honda Civic LX, was stopped for traffic as he traveled southbound on Main Street near the intersection with Church Hill Road shortly after 8 pm, Wednesday, May 25.

Joseph P. Tartaglia, 27, of Newtown, operating a 2011 Honda CR-V, was also traveling southbound on Main Street, multiple vehicles behind the Civic. Tartaglia began to pass a long line of traffic on the right.

Tartaglia told police he was following a bus as he was passing vehicles lined up to turn left onto Church Hill Road.

Wood told police that he saw the bus pass him on the right. He then attempted to move the Civic right, to pass the vehicle in front of him that was turning left. As he attempted to pass, the CR-V struck the Civic.

The CR-V sustained minor front left bumper/quarter panel damage. The Civic sustained minor right front quarter panel damage. Both vehicles were able to be driven from the scene.

No injuries were reported. Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

Tartaglia was issued a verbal warning for improper passing, and Wood was issued a verbal warning for unsafe movement.

Six Vehicle Crash Closes Highway

Connecticut State Police (CSP), local firefighters, local and regional ambulance crews, and at least one paramedic responded to a six-vehicle accident that closed I-84 West between Exits 10 and 9 around 7:29 pm, Wednesday, May 26.

CSP report a 2016 Freightliner Cascadia, a 2011 Porsche Cayenne Turbo, a 2021 Chevrolet CT 33003 box truck, a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado, a 2016 Volkswagen Passat, and a 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4-matic were all traveling westbound on I-84, approximately three-tenths of a mile west of Exit 10.

While approaching a construction pattern, the Freightliner, operated by Jahlani A. Smith, 29, of Dallas, N.C., failed to slow down and rear-ended the Porsche, which was being operated by Jason Hanna, 32, of Newtown.

That crash caused a domino collision among the remaining four vehicles: the box truck, operated by Michael E. Cavallo, 37, of Brookfield; the Silverado, operated by Peter Moeller, 45, of Newtown; the Passat, operated by Alfredo L.S. Jimenez, 30, of New York City; and the Mercedes, operated by Benjamin Recio, 49, of Sandy Hook.

Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Newtown Hook & Ladder, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Nuvance Ambulance, and a paramedic all responded.

Several of the drivers were transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the police report.

The highway was closed for an unspecified time following the crash. All involved vehicles needed to be towed.

Smith was issued an infraction for following too closely resulting in an accident.
