Softball Team Blanked In State Playoff Opener
Newtown High School and host EO Smith of Storrs combined to hang goose egg after goose egg on the scoreboard during the May 30 Class LL state tournament first round contest.
Unfortunately for the No. 19 seed Nighthawks, No. 14 EO Smith scratched out a first-inning run and made it stand up for a 1-0 victory, ending Newtown's campaign.
Sara Kennedy allowed only four hits, walked two, and struck out three batters to give the Hawks a chance.
Newtown's hitters managed only a pair of hits - singles off the bats of Emily Bell and Kamdynn Moroney - and the Hawks had their best threat in the fourth inning when they had two runners on base and two outs, but couldn't cash in.
Moroney's single was the 99th and final hit of her high school career.
EO Smith advanced to play No. 3 Middletown in the second round, on May 31.
