With its second annual Horse Show just days away, the Second Company Governorâs Horse Guard â headquartered at Fairfield Hills â has joined in formation with Bridgeportâs Swim Across the Sound to help cancer patients and their families clear hurdles and win victories.
The Show will be held Sunday, June 4, at 8 am on the Fairfield Hills ground. Rain date is Sunday, June 11. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Swim Across the Sound for its support of services that educate, screen and assist those dealing with effects of cancer.
âWe had 115 riders last year and around 500 spectators,â said Lieutenant Mike Safarewitz, adjutant of the company. âWeâd like to see that kind of turnout again.â
There will be competition for all ages, for both English- and Western-style riders.
âThis isnât a hunt club and itâs not for professional riders,â said Lt. Safarewitz. âThere is no pressure. Itâs just a big, fun day.â
There will be refreshments, vendors, and an operating blacksmith shop overseen by smithy Dan Messner, who produces pieces of wrought iron.
According to Captain Peter Concilio, riders come from as far away as Vermond and begin arriving at 6:30 or 7 am. The show manager is Evelyn Lindborne of Brushy Hill Farm.
âShe comes in with a team of her own,â said Cpt. Concilio, âand takes care of registration and administration. We could never do this without her.â
The show will be governed by AHSA rules.
