Newtown Youth Services Announces Summer Programs
Summer may officially be a few weeks away, but Newtown Youth Services is set to launch two new programs and bring back, by popular demand, two favorites.
The week of June 19 kicks of NYSâ summer programs with one new offering, and an old favorite.
Sports Fun + debuts as the result of interest in additional programs revolving around the sporting theme. Sports + will run from 6 to 7:30 pm, June 19 through June 23, at Dickinson Park. A variety of sports will be explored such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, flag football, kayak racing, and other crazy field and water sports. Each session will also feature a different challenge and end with a swim.
Sports Fun + is open to all students entering grades 6 through 8. The fee is $35 for all five evenings.
The first old favorite that is back this summer is the Super Sitters Babysitting Course, which will be offered on a slightly different schedule this year. The complete class will be offered over the course of five days. There will be two separate times available, 12 to 1:30 pm and 3 to 4:30 pm, and the program will run each day from June 19 to June 23.
At the end of the session, if students attend all five chosen sessions, they will receive their certification cards. Previous class members will be notified of dates available for make-up.
Snacks are provided, and space is limited. The fee is $25, and classes are held at Newtown Youth Services.
Back by popular demand are The Great Outdoors and Nature Detectives. They will run from June 26 through June 30. The programs are held at Cullens Youth Association on Taunton Lake Road. âNature Detectivesâ meet at 9 to 10:30 am and The Great Outdoors meets from 10:45 am to 12:15 pm. Children need to bring a light snack and water. It is recommended that participants wear sturdy shoes and bug spray.
Both programs will explore the life of insects found at Cullens, such as the dragonfly. How trees grow and the importance of water will also be discussed. The overall theme this year is âcircle of lifeâ and how nature renews itself. The fee is $25 for the week for both programs.
Juneâs programs wrap up with Outdoor Challenge â A Day Hike, which will be held on Wednesday, June 28, from 9 am to 6 pm. Take a day and hike in Cornwall, CT. Have fun outdoors and learn or practice various skills and techniques related to an enjoyable hike. Hikers will prepare dinner; everyone will have a job. Solving different challenges that you might encounter along a hike will also be part of the experience. The fee is $10 per person, which includes food and transportation. Limited to six students, grades 6 through 12.
Please call Newtown Youth Services at 270-4335 to register for any of these programs.
