Collision At Driveway

Newtown Police report Ian Gay, 55, of Attleboro, Mass, operating a 2001 Chevy Silverado, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road in the left most turn lane at 5:31 pm May 12. Christina Anglin, 38, of East Haven, operating a 2015 Mazda CX-5, was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road. Police said Gay attempted to make a left turn into a driveway, and the front driver’s side of Anglin’s vehicle struck the passenger’s side of Gay’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

Gay was issued a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way when making a left turn.

Right Of Way Warning

Newtown Police report Matthew Clark, 50, of Newtown, operating a 2019 Honda CRV, was traveling eastbound on Mt Pleasant Road at 5:19 pm May 13. Albert Mack, 55, of Brookfield, operating a 2021 Toyota 4Runner, was traveling westbound on Mt Pleasant Road. Clark attempted to make a left turn onto Hawleyville Road, and the passenger front of Mack’s vehicle struck the passenger side of Clark’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Clark was given a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way when making a left turn.

Struck While Turning Left

Newtown Police report Katherine Stevens, 36, of Seymour, operating a 2010 Subaru Impreza, was traveling northbound on Main Street at 7:34 am May 17. She was traveling behind a 2011 Honda Accord operated by Arthur Johnson, 54, of Newtown. Johnson stopped to make a left turn onto Country Club Lane, and the front of Stevens’ vehicle collided with the rear of Johnson’s vehicle.

Johnson said his back was sore but refused medical attention. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Stevens was given an infraction for following too closely and a verbal warning for operating an unregistered motor vehicle.

Police Seeking Vandal

Newtown Police are seeking the public’s help with regards to a vandalism at Dickinson Park, 50 Elm Drive, that was reported at 7:57 am May 17. Police state that they have received several complaints from the town’s Parks & Recreation Department with regards to an unknown person or persons spray painting graffiti on the buildings and bathrooms. Police said that the graffiti has a tag name of “Moser.”

Police are asking that anyone with information that would be helpful in identifying the culprits to call Officer Figal at 203-426-5841.

Incident In Intersection

Newtown Police report Domingos Goncalves, 47, of Shelton, operating a 2012 Audi A4, was stopped at the stop sign at Jordan Hill Road at the intersection of Berkshire Road at 8:08 am May 17. Italo Salinas-Cordova, 36, of Danbury, operating a 2003 Ford Econoline, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road. Police said Goncalves entered the intersection to turn left onto Berkshire Road, and the front of Salinas-Cordova’s vehicle made contact with the front of Goncalves’ vehicle.

Salinas-Cordova was treated at the scene for a possible injury. Both vehicles were towed.

Goncalves was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way at a stop sign.

Evading Arrest

Newtown Police report that at 5:21 pm May 18, officers responded to a two car motor vehicle accident with injuries, where one car fled the scene of the collision. The driver of the evading vehicle, Julio Antonio Maldonado Rivera, 46, of Bridgeport, was located and placed under arrest.

Upon further investigation, police found the vehicle had been stolen from Danbury. Maldonado was charged with illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under suspension, reckless driving, evading responsibility for injury or property damage, passing in a no passing zone, failure to keep right at a curve or intersection, and third-degree larceny. He was held with a court date of May 19.

Struck A Tree

Newtown Police report Vincent Delorenzo, 17, of Stratford, operating a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado, was traveling westbound on Brushy Hill Road at 4 pm May 18. Delorenzo attempted to make a left turn onto Castle Meadow Road when another unknown vehicle began to enter the westbound lane towards Delorenzo’s vehicle. Police said the pickup then left the roadway to the right to avoid a collision and drove over a rock wall before the front end of his vehicle struck a tree.

No injuries were reported.

No enforcement action was taken.

Sugar Street Collision

Newtown Police report Scott Cartwright, 50, of Monroe, operating a 2007 Toyota Tundra, was traveling eastbound on Sugar Street at 4:26 pm May 18. Randall Light, 54, of Cheshire, operating a 2013 Volkswagen Passat, was stopped in westbound traffic in the right turning lane of Sugar Street where it intersects with Elm Drive. Police said Cartwright attempted to make a left turn onto Elm Drive, and the driver’s side rear tire struck the rear bumper of Light’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

Cartwright was given a verbal warning for failure to yield right of way.

Rear Ended On I-84

Connecticut State Police report that Brian Carey, 58, of Kittery, Maine, operating a 2021 Volvo XC60, was traveling eastbound on Interstate 84 in the area of exit 11 at 4:22 pm May 20. Bruno Nascimento, 44, of Waterbury, operating a 2014 Ram C/V Tradesman, was also traveling eastbound on Interstate 84 near exit 11. Carey stopped for traffic and was rear-ended by Nascimento.

Nascimento left the scene prior to arrival by state troopers. The incident is still under investigation.

Backed Into Stopped Vehicle

Newtown Police report Ben Zheng, 66, of Fishkill, N.Y., operating a 2010 Honda Odyssey, was in the parking lot of 151 South Main Street at 10:49 am May 22. Peter Griffin, 28, of Southbury, operating a 2020 GMC Sierra, was stopped at the stop sign of the parking lot. Zheng passed Griffin on the left and pulled in front of Griffin’s vehicle. Police said Zheng then attempted to turn left onto South Main Street before stopping and backing up in an attempt to then turn right on South Main Street. The rear bumper of Zheng’s vehicle struck the front bumper of Griffin’s vehicle in the process.

No injuries were reported.

No enforcement action was taken as the incident occurred on private property.

Hit By Towed Truck

Newtown Police report that Samuel Neelands, 34, of Patterson, N.Y., operating a 2021 Dodge 5500, was towing a 2021 Isuzu NRR northbound on South Main Street after turning right from Mile Hill Road at 4:55 pm May 23. Shawn Massicott, 36, of Winsted, operating a 2011 Dodge Ram 1500, was stopped in traffic in the left turn lane, southbound on South Main Street. The Isuzu NRR came out of the forklift on Neelands’ tow truck and struck Massicott’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

Neelands received a written warning for failure to secure a load. Massicott received a written warning for failure to renew a driver’s license.

Disorderly Conduct Charge

Newtown Police arrested Cynthia Mauer, 45, of Newtown, at 6 pm May 22 on the charge of disorderly conduct. She was released on a promise to appear with a court date of May 23.

Oil Truck Into CR-V

Newtown Police report Dante Salce, 25, of Shelton, operating a 2002 International 4000 Series 4400, a heating oil truck, was backing into a driveway on Jeremiah Road at 9:13 am May 24. A 2009 Honda CR-V owned by Peter Davenport of Sandy Hook was parked in the driveway. The rear passenger’s side bumper of Salce’s vehicle struck the front driver’s side quarter panel of Davenport’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

No enforcement action was taken because the incident occurred on private property.

Hawleyville and Newtown Hook & Ladder firefighters, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and Connecticut State Police (CSP) troopers all responded to the I-84 median west of the Schoolhouse Hill Road overpass around 1 pm Friday, May 20, following a rollover there. According to the CSP report, Connor R. Chnowski, 17, of Brookfield, was operating a 2019 Ram 1500 Classic SLT eastbound on I-84, approximately one-half mile prior to Exit 10, when he lost control of the pick-up truck. The truck left the road, struck a tree in the median, and rolled onto its roof, perpendicular to the road. Hawleyville Fire responded on the eastbound side of the highway; Hook & Ladder on the westbound, seen here. Chnowski was transported to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, also according to the CSP report. He was cited for failure to maintain a lane. —Bee Photo, Hicks
