Backhoe Vandalism

Sometime between 3 pm May 23 and the early morning of May 27, someone vandalized two backhoes that were parked at the Nagy Brothers Construction Company gravel mine on Cold Spring Road in Botsford. The firm has been mining the site for years.

Police ask anyone with information about the criminal mischief to contact them at 426-5841.

Chainsaw Theft

On either May 13 or 14, someone stole a Stihl-brand chainsaw from the St Rose Church grounds on Church Hill Road. The stolen item is an orange-and-white Model 28 chainsaw. Police ask anyone with information on the theft to contact them.

Safety Belt

Police said that at about 9:39 pm May 27, they stopped motorist Matthew Gilmartin, 45, of New Milford on Queen Street for driving without wearing his safety belt. Police charged Gilmartin with failure to wear a safety belt and with driving while under suspension. Police released Gilmartin from custody on a written promise to appear June 10 in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

Mile Hill Crash

Motorist Traci Barry, 25, of Bridgeport was driving a 2001 Nissan Sentra sedan westward on Mile Hill Road about 4:22 pm May 26, when after making a curve in the road, she lost control of the auto, crossed the road and struck a utility pole along the eastbound road shoulder, police said. Barry was not injured.

Police issued her a written warning for failure to drive to the right.

Bennetts Bridge Collision

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Bennetts Bridge Road and Jeremiah Road in Sandy Hook about 8 am May 27.

Motorist Michael Cerreta, 46, of 44 Bennetts Bridge Road was driving a 1999 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck northward on Bennetts Bridge Road, as motorist Haven A. Quint, 43, of Thomaston was driving a 1993 International 4900 tanker truck southward on Bennetts Bridge Road, police said.

The Toyota turned left to enter Jeremiah Road, after the International had turned right to enter Jeremiah Road, resulting in a collision, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Cerreta a written warning for making a restricted turn.
