DANBURY – After limping to a 7-6 record during the regular season, it seemed as if the Newtown High School golf team would do nothing more than bring a mediocre season to an end in the South-West Conference tournament at the Ridgewood Country Club in Danbury.

But Mike Troy shot a blistering 6-over 78 and led the Nighthawks – seeded eighth – to a fourth-place finish.

“We lost some tough matches this year,” said head coach Jen Huettner. “But I knew they’d be pumped up for this one. A couple of kids went down to play the course (Tuesday) and they went down and took care of business. It was great.”

Troy finished second to Rob Sisca of Weston (75) and birdied the par-4, 18th hole to do it – finishing ahead of Tyler Kupper of Weston, who carded a 79. Other top 10 finishers include Chris Catropa of Bunnell (80), Greg Kaiser (80), Matt Johnson of Bunnell (80), Alex Rocque of Pomperaug (81), Greg Totillo of Brookfield (82) and Pat Owen of Joel Barlow (82).

Weston finished first overall at 322, followed by Bunnell at 336, Pomperaug at 340, Newtown at 342, Brookfield at 345, New Milford at 351, Notre Dame at 361, and Masuk at 383.

Troy was named to the All-SWC team and Ben Moore was tabbed for the All-Colonial Division team.
