High School Junior Wins

Journalism Award

Newtown High School junior Stephanie Miles recently received the news writing award from the Connecticut Journalism Education Association’s first statewide news writing competition.

High school journalists were encouraged to submit stories written for their school papers concerning technology issues in today’s high schools to one of three categories: news writing, news feature, or editorial opinion.

Stephanie’s “Technology Takes a Seat in the Classroom” won in the news writing categories.

Stephanie is a regular contributor to the high school’s newspaper, The Hawkeye, which is operated as part of the school’s journalism curriculum.

As an award recipient, Stephanie received a $250 grant in her name for the high school, thanks to AT&T, one of the corporate sponsors for the competition.

The Connecticut Journalism Education Association’s Awards for Excellence in news writing were presented at Workshop 2000 for high school editors and reporters at Quinnipiac College last Friday, May 26.
