Newtown High School’s tennis teams competed in the South-West Conference championships this past week, culminating with finals on May 23.

The boys squad had its No. 2 doubles team of Oliver Clancy and Theo Anderson reach the championship round, where the Nighthawk tandem fell to Weston 1-6, 0-6. The No. 3 doubles team of Trevor Hislop and Mikey Berry also reached the finals and lost to Weston 6-4, 4-6, 3-6.

No. 1 singles player Sam Cannizzo, No. 2 Josh Parsons, No. 3 Ben Ochs, and No. 4 Orion Bracksieck also competed, as did the No. 1 doubles team of Alex Kyrprianou and Andrew Sposato.

“I’m so proud of how much the team has grown this year. They’ve all worked hard and deserve all the success they’ve earned,” Newtown Coach Anna Malkin said.

Newtown’s girls’ squad saw its top two singles players reach the pinnacle round. No. 1 player Willow Asante-LaBash placed second, falling 6-2, 7-5 in her match with Joel Barlow of Redding, and No. 2 competitor Madi Singlak fell 6-4, 6-4 to Weston.

Also competing for Newtown were Sophia Dutsar and Ella Moritz, along with doubles tandems Ameila Hufschmied and Kristen Reisert, Caitlin Briggs and Olivia Guizzo, along with Erin Marshall and Margaret Donovan.
