Both NHS Track And Field Teams Earn Second Place Behind Several Event Wins

Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ track and field teams both placed second in the South-West Conference Championships, held at New Milford High, on May 24. The teams combined for several standout individual and relay performances, including first-place efforts.

The girls’ squad scored 135 points, coming up just short to Weston, which compiled 142.42. The Newtown boys had 116.50; New Milford was first with 126.

“This was truly a team effort today. We are so proud of this team and how they performed today. So excited for the rest of the postseason,” said Becky Osborne, head coach of the boys.

“It was an overall amazing effort, and closer than anticipated,” said Becky Bourret, head coach of the girls.

Riley Powers was first with a personal record time of 5:04.55 in the 1600 meter run, placed second in the 800 in a PR time of 2:18.72, and anchored Newtown’s first-place 4x400 relay.

Hannah Snayd was third in the 800 with a PR time of 2:19.93.

Elise Barricelli came in second in the 400 in 59.95 seconds, came in second in the 200 in 26.41, and was the first leg in Newtown’s first-place 4x400 relay.

Skylar Howard was fourth in the 100 dash in 12.98 and fifth in the 200 in a time of 27.27.

Amelia Daly came in sixth in the 400 in 1:01.86.

In the 300 hurdles, Kayleigh Troy came in third in 50.56 and Aashni Shetty was fifth in 51.09. Troy was seventh in the 100 hurdles in 17.39.

Shayna Millard came in second in the shot-put (30-09.25) and third in the discus (94-10). Cailyn Sullivan placed seventh in the javelin event with a throw of 78-08.

Jaime Adams was seventh in the long jump (15-07), fourth in the high jump (4-10), third in the triple jump (33-01.50), and fifth in the 100 hurdles in 16.92.

The 4x800 relay team of Snayd, Ally McCarthy, Clara D’Amico, and Sophia Guevara broke the school record and came in fourth in 9:48.45.

The 4x100 relay of Ella Hall, Elise Barricelli, Skylar Howard, and Amelia Daly was second in 51.20.

Newtown’s 4x400 relay of Barricelli, Howard, Daly, and McCarthy won in a time of 4:02.48.

Boys Have Standouts

On the boys’ side, there were plenty of great efforts and results. In the 1600, Soheib Dissa was second in 4:29.67. Dissa was third in the 3200 in 10:07.38.

Newtown had a pair of strong finishes in the 110 hurdles as Kevin Murray was first in 16.01 and Oliver Guzy came in seventh in 18.09.

The 100 dash featured Caleb Smith placing second in 11.22 and Victor Souza seventh in 11.87.

Murray won the 300 hurdles in 43.43.

In the 800, Aidan Budge was first in 2:00.61.

In the 200, Smith placed fifth in 23.50 and Hayden Bobowick was eighth in 23.79.

The 4x400 relay of Budge, Bobowick, John Moxham, and Cameron Whorf was third in 3:32.50.

The 4x800 relay team of Budge, Connor Dullinger, Whorf, and Dissa was second in 8:20.13.

Newtown’s 4x100 of Dylan Magazu, Souza, Guzy, and Bobowick came in seventh in 45.66.

Smith won the javelin event with a throw of 145-05.

Gabe Appiah was eighth in the long jump with a leap of 17-11.

In the shot-put, Murray came in fourth with a throw of 42-11 and Brock Dukate was seventh with a 40-10.75.

Dom Simpri was sixth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-06.

In the discus event, Dukate was second with a 113-06.50 and Murray came in fourth with a 116-04.50.
