Lower Flags Monday Morning; Commemoration Ceremony Planned At VFW
In observance of Memorial Day, all United States and state flags should be lowered on Memorial Day Monday, May 30. In accordance with US Flag code, flags should be lowered at sunrise on the day that Americans honor those who have served and those who continue to serve in the Armed Forces.Memorial Day Proclamation.
As is tradition, flags should return to full-staff at noon.
On Thursday, President Barack Obama issued his annual
"With courage and a love of country that knows no limits, America's men and women in uniform exemplify patriotism at its core - stepping into harm's way to protect our people and to safeguard the ideals that have long sustained our democracy," the announcement opened. "Those who serve under the stars and stripes embody the highest form of citizenship, and on Memorial Day, we pay solemn tribute to those brave Americans who laid down their lives to defend our freedom.
"Since America's earliest days, proud patriots have forged a safer, more secure Nation, and though battlefields have changed and technology has evolved, the selflessness of our service members has remained steadfast," the proclamation continued.
"Today, and every day," the proclamation also stated, "let us remember the servicemen and women we have lost, and let us honor them by rededicating ourselves to strengthening our Nation's promise. With love, grace, and reflection, let us honor our fallen fellow Americans, known and unknown, who sacrificed their freedom to ensure our own."
President Obama, following what was set forth by Congress on May 11, 1950, urged all Americans to "observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace."
The President designated "the hour beginning in each locality at 11:00 a.m. of that day as a time during which people may unite in prayer."
Newtown VFW post will have its annual Memorial Day Commemoration Ceremony on Monday, beginning at 11 am. The public is invited to join post members for the brief ceremony, which will take place at the post, 18 Tinkerfield Road.
In addition, President Obama pointed out that Congress has designated 3 pm location time on Memorial Day "as a time for all Americans to observe, in their own way, the National Moment of Silence."
President Obama also urged "the appropriate officials of all units of government, to direct that the flag be flown at half-staff until noon on this Memorial Day on all buildings, grounds, and naval vessels throughout the United States and in all areas under its jurisdiction and control.
"I also request the people of the United States to display the flag at half-staff from their homes for the customary forenoon period."
Governor Dannel P. Malloy on Friday did respond with his annual directive for Memorial Day, saying that US and Connecticut flags are to "fly at half-staff on Monday, May 30, 2016 from sunrise until noon in observation of Memorial Day."
He also issued a statement, saying: "Connecticut has a rich military history and a tradition of service. We are incredibly grateful for the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect and defend the freedoms of this country.
"On Memorial Day, we salute the generations of heroes who have lost their lives in the fight to make our nation a better, safer place. We are forever grateful to them, and to their families for what they have given our country," he governor said.
Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman on May 27 also issued a brief statement.
"This weekend in towns across the state, we gather to reflect and remember the millions of heroes who've sacrificed so deeply to protect this nation," said Ms Wyman. "We are grateful and humbled by their legacies, proud tradition of service, and a noble sense of duty and commitment - one that we carry into our own lives through good works for our communities and our nation. We recall that their families sacrificed just as deeply, and they, too, are in our hearts on Memorial Day and every other day."
