Author and illustrator Grace Lin visited Sandy Hook School on Tuesday, May 20, to speak with students and share some of her works.

During one presentation to Monroe preschool students, who attend school at Chalk Hill Middle School, where Sandy Hook School is also housed, and Sandy Hook School kindergarten students, Ms Lin read from her book The Ugly Vegetables.

“She has written a lot of the fun books we have read in the last few weeks,” Sandy Hook School library/media specialist Yvonne Cech told the assembled students.

Before reading from the book, Ms Lin asked the students why they thought she might have called vegetables ugly when she was younger. She also explained that The Ugly Vegetables was partially based on a story from her own childhood.

According to her website, gracelin.com, Ms Lin’s book Where The Mountain Meets The Moon earned a 2010 Newbery Honor, and her other books include Year of the Dog and Ling and Ting Not Exactly the Same.

During her visit to Sandy Hook School, Ms Lin also held presentations for other grade levels and signed books during the school’s lunch time.

Author and illustrator Grace Lin introduced herself and read from her book The Ugly Vegetables for students at Sandy Hook  Elementary School on Tuesday, May 20.
