Chess For the Beginner - A course for students exiting second to fifth grade, running July 11-15, from 8 to 11 am, at Newtown High School. Cost is $100.

The course is a combination of instruction and play intended to help the beginning player, who understands how the pieces move and has played only a few games of chess. The class is limited to 16 students.

Chess For the Advanced - A course for students exiting fourth grade and up, running July 18-22, from 8 to 11 am, at NHS; cost is $120.

The course is a combination of play and instruction with a focus on the thinking process in chess, learning to properly play the middle game and improving one's tactical ability. Students will compete in a formal tournament at the end of the session. Students must be beyond the beginner level. The class limited to 16 students.

Design It, Build It, Launch It - A course for students exiting fourth to seventh grade. The course will be offered in two sessions, both at Reed Intermediate School.

The first session will run July 5-15, weekdays 8:30 am until 12:30 pm, and cost is $294. The second session will run July 18-28, also 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, and cost for this session is $325.

The course will go over engineering concepts for students who enjoy science and are curious about how things work. Students will explore machines like catapults and trebuchets, building and testing them, and then fast forward to more modern inventions such as rockets and hydraulic machines. The class is limited to 12 students.

Graphics Camp - A course for students exiting fifth to eighth grade, running in two sessions, both at NHS.

The first session runs July 5-15, 9 am to noon, and cost is $264. The second session runs July 18-29, 9 am to noon, and cost is $289.

Students will jump into the world of Adobe Illustrator, learning the basic functions and tools of the computer program. Students will learn to turn boring "selfies" into a work of art, learn about live trace, live paint and the symbol sprayer. This is a beginner course.

Leonardo Da Vinci's Workshop With Lego - A course for students exiting kindergarten to second grade, running from July 11-15, 12-2 pm, $119, at NHS.

Students will explore the mechanisms and inventions of one of the greatest minds of the Italian Renaissance: Leonardo de Vinci. Students will build Lego projects like the cam hammer, the Archimedes Screw, and the worm gear lifter. Students will learn concepts of engineering, physics, and more as they have fun recreating the various Leonardo de Vinci contraptions

Leonard da Vinci's Workshop with Lego - A course for students exiting second to sixth grade, running from July 5-18, 9 am to noon, at NHS, $144.

Engineer Fundamentals Using Lego - A course for students exiting second to sixth grade, July 11-15, 8:30 am to 11:30 am, at NHS, $179.

Students will learn to power up their engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnologies and using Lego. Students will apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as arch bridges, skyscrapers, motorized cars and the Battletrack.

Engineering Fundamentals: Mine, Craft and Build Using Lego - A course for students existing second to sixth grade, July 18-22, at NHS, 9 am until noon, $179.

Students will build a motorized walking Creeper, a terrifying Ghast and a motorized Minecart. This project-based camp, designed by Play-Well instructors, combines the basic format of its core engineering-themed programs based on the world of Minecraft.

Students will explore real-world concepts in physics, engineering and architecture while building their favorite Minecraft objects.

Arts and Architecture Using Lego - A course for students exiting second to sixth grade, July 25-29, 9 am until noon, at NHS, $179.

Students will explore great works of art and architecture through Lego. Students will collaborate in small groups to build grand structures such as the Parthenon in Greece, the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, the tree houses of Papua New Guinea, and New York's Empire State Building.

They will also follow in the footsteps of master artists with Lego interpretations of sculptures, mosaics and stained glass.

SMART (Summer Music and Arts) Camp - This year's SMART Camp runs in two sessions, both at Head O' Meadow Elementary School.

The first session will be July 5-15, 8:30 am to 1 pm, $289. The second session will be July 18-29, 8:30 am until 1 pm, $319.

The camp offers creative arts, theater, science and more with a staff of professional artists and teachers.

PSAT & SAT Review - Newtown High School Continuing Education and Lentz & Lentz SAT Prep are offering a weekly eight-session, 24-hour professional PSAT & SAT prep program beginning Tuesday, July 5, at NHS.

Classes run Tuesday and Thursday for four weeks, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. The comprehensive, three-hour per session, individualized program is geared to assist bright, average, and underachieving students. The class time is split equally between English and math, covering all facets of the exam.

The verbal part consists of essay writing, grammatical skills, reading comprehension, vocabulary, contextual completions, speed-reading techniques, all applicable to the SAT. The mathematical part covers myriad problems, including: arithmetical skills, advanced algebra, basic geometry, functions, exponents (including our famous "tip sheet") and modern mathematic concepts.
