Tennis Players Earn Titles In SWC Individual Tourney
Members of Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ tennis teams participated in the South-West Conference individual tournament on May 26 and 27 — the girls at Joel Barlow in Redding, and the boys at Immaculate High in Danbury — and both squads had champions.
Newtown’s No. 2 doubles team of Lindsay O’Donnell and Emily McCoy won the championship, and No. 2 singles player Aimee Alexander was runner-up. Doubles players Alisha Aggarwal and Amanda Berry won their first-round match and lost in the semifinals. Lauren Beier, Anna Biondi, and the doubles tandem of Lily Mittleman and Julia Doyle also participated in the tourney.
In boys’ action, No. 3 singles player Matt Carino defeated Matt Doan of Pomperaug, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, to win the championship. No. 2 singles player Joey Conrod and the third doubles tandem of Jordan Klein and Grant Larson reached the finals.
No. 4 singles player Peter Winans lost to Eric Benninghoff of Weston, 6-4, 6-1, in the semis. Newtown’s top singles player, Keaton McCleary lost to eventual champion Blake Norton of Bunnell, 8-2 in the first round. On the doubles courts, the No. 1 tandem of Kunal Marwah and James Frazzetta fell to Pomperaug in the semis, 6-0, 6-0. The No. 2 team of Michael Dutsar and Justin Oelberg lost to Weston in semis, 6-3, 6-4.
