Nighthawks Compete In SWC Championships

Newtown High School’s boys’ and girls’ outdoor track and field teams competed in South-West Conference Championships this week. The boys placed fifth among 13 schools in the meet at Weston on Tuesday, and the girls were eighth among 15 schools in the meet at New Fairfield on Monday.

The boys scored 65 points to earn a top-five finish. Powerhouse New Milford took first with 105 points, host Weston took second with 94 points, Brookfield was third with 93.5 points and Pomperaug was fourth with 77.5 points. The girls scored 31.5 points. Weston won the meet with 97.

Two new school records were set by the boys. John Wlasuk broke the shot-put record with a throw of 50-5.5 which previously had been held by Matt Regan (49-7.5 with his throw in 2002). The 4x400 relay team of Aaron Nezvesky, Adam Buccino, Eric Thornberg, and Ian McEvoy set the new mark at 3:29.56. The previous record of 3:32.17 had bet set In 2001 by Kyle Tobin, Peter Terrance, Tom Fullman, and John Ehlers.
