NHS Career Center Looking For

Adult Volunteers

Parents across the district received an email earlier this week from the Newtown High School Career Center looking for volunteers to provide career shadowing, career speakers, mentoring for the school’s Junior/Senior Project course, and internship mentoring.

Five years ago, according to the Career Center, parents were asked by mail to volunteer for the same efforts.

“As typical of this town,” the email read, “the response was wonderful. Many students took advantage of the opportunity to leave the classroom and get a glimpse of the real world.”

The Career Center Programs “continue to grow as students realize how invaluable career knowledge and exploration is in helping them to make better choices for their future.”

Career shadowing provides junior or senior students the opportunity to spend a day, or part of a day, at the volunteer’s place of business.

The school’s career speaking program asks volunteers to speak to a group of high school students about their career and answer questions.

In the school’s Junior/Senior Project course, students work with community mentors in a career-oriented area of interest to create a product to be presented at the school. The program generally runs for two marking periods and is an honors level course.

Internships, offered through the Career Center, provide students the opportunity to work for an employer, usually for one or more semester for a total of 30 hours. Interns may or may not be paid.

To learn more about volunteer opportunities or to be sent the form from the Career Center, email Kitty Latowicki at latowickik@newtown.k12.ct.us or call the Career Center at 203-426-1915.
