A Simple Solution

To the Editor:

I would like to thank all those who have volunteered their time on this 2010 budget. However, as a licensed CPA and CFO of an insurance company, I voted No because the cost of living in this town for the past 17 years that we have been living here is getting way out of control. My simple solution is this: For all the education supporters that want an increased budget simply send in an extra thousand or two with your property tax payments. Also, before you do so, please reread the article in the July 17, 2009, Bee, page 6 entitled “Finance Board Examines School Bd. Budget Statements to End of Year Realities.” Maybe you should also read the July 17, 2009, News-Times article page C-1 entitled “Newtown Defends Expensive Trash Deal.” After reading these two articles you may change you mind about the “underfunded” Newtown education budget.

If the budgets I prepare have as many errors or bad business decisions as the Newtown Board of Education consistently has, I certainly would have difficulty keeping the title CFO.

These high taxes negatively affect the values of all the Newtown taxpayer home values. To think that thousands of Newtown voters voted No (twice already) because we need to spend more just doesn’t make sense. At some point, all of us have to face the reality that spending in this town is out of control and just say No. I did and will continue to do so until we have a realistic budget.
