Seymour police lodged drug-related charges against three Newtown teenagers who were attending the Friday, May 21, Newtown High School prom held at The Inn at Villa Bianca on Route 34 in Seymour.
Newtown police later arrested one of those youths on a warrant on four charges, three of which were drug-related, stemming from a four-vehicle accident that he caused on Main Street on the night of March 26.
Seymour police said that while on patrol near the prom at 10:28 pm, they spotted a minor motor vehicle accident in the restaurantâs parking lot, so they investigated.
Seymour police said they learned that one of the motorists involved in the accident, James Pixley, 17, of 48 Bear Hills Road, Newtown, was wanted by Newtown police on an arrest warrant.
Seymour police then searched Pixley and found him to be in possession of a marijuana pipe, resulting in a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
Newtown High School security staff searched the contents of backpacks of the several passengers in the vehicle that Pixley was driving, Seymour police said.
That search resulted in passenger Kelly McDevitt, 16, of 41 Echo Valley Road, Newtown, being charged with possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, Seymour police said.
On learning that Pixley was in Seymour police custody, Newtown police transported Pixley to Newtown where they charged him on an arrest warrant with failure to keep to the right, failure to keep prescription drugs in their original container, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Those four charges stem from a four-vehicle accident, involving three sport-utility vehicles and a sedan, that occurred on Main Street near Edmond Town Hall on the night of Friday, March 26, resulting in the closure of a section of the busy street for about an hour. The accident happened while Main Street was lined with the parked, vacant vehicles of people who were watching a movie in the town hall theater. The crash involved three parked vehicles.
In that March 26 accident, at about 7:34 pm, motorist Pixley, who was driving a 1988 Chevrolet sport-utility vehicle northward near town hall, struck three vehicles that were parked alongside the northbound curb. The Chevrolet struck a 2001 Honda CRV, a 1998 Audi A-4, and a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero. The accident occurred near the crosswalk in front of town hall. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps then transported Pixley to Danbury Hospital on a report of back and neck pain.
On May 21, Seymour police released Pixley on a promise to appear June 7 in Derby Superior Court to answer the Seymour drug charge. Newtown police released Pixley on $500 bail for a June 10 appearance in Danbury Superior Court to answer the four other charges.
Seymour police released McDevitt on a promise to appear June 7 in Derby Superior Court.
In another incident at the May 21 prom, the high school security staff was checking students entering the restaurant for contraband, Seymour police said.
High school security guard Richard Novia called police at 7:51 pm, after checking the contents of the purse of Andrea Ragot, 18, of 39 The Boulevard. Seymour police said Novia found two white pills in Ragotâs purse with specific markings on them, which are believed to be the hallucinogenic drug Ecstasy.
Seymour police charged Ragot with the possession or control of a hallucinogenic drug. Ragot was released on a promise to appear June 7 in Derby Superior Court.
