Photography That Questions Perception

NEW HAVEN — As part of Creative Arts Workshop’s continuing tradition of showcasing work of emerging and established artists from across the nation, it is presenting “Fact/Fiction” in the Hilles Gallery through June 25.

Juried by internationally recognized photo artist Dawoud Bey, “Fact/Fiction” includes work by 25 photo artists from across the country, working in diverse styles and media, together showing the tremendous breadth and range of photographic practice today.

Each piece in “Fact/Fiction” asks the viewer to think “What am I looking at? Is it fact, or is it fiction?” Some of the real-looking photographs of buildings are complete fabrications. Some are seamlessly constructed scenes of events that have never taken place, ghostly homes or far-off travels and explorations. Still others explore reality itself, be it from the inside of a dollhouse or a statement on consumer culture.

The works incorporates digital technology, three-dimensionally and two-dimensionally in a variety of scale and medium, and each one is a puzzle for the viewer.

Creative Arts Workshop is a nonprofit community art center devoted to fostering creativity through participation in and appreciation of the visual arts, serving the greater New Haven area and beyond for more than 40 years.
