Mark Twain And Music On Tap For June Love & Knishes

SOUTHBURY — The public is invited to attend “Love and Knishes” lunch programs of the Federation-Jewish Communities of Western Connecticut, which meets every Tuesday. Luncheons take place at noon at the Walzer Family Jewish Community Campus, 444 Main Street North.

The food is freshly prepared each week by Chef Nancy Stokes and features healthful, delicious menus. There is a suggested donation of $5.50 for seniors. Following lunch, there is always entertainment or a lecture at 1 pm.

On June 1, the actor Richard Clark will perform “And Now . . . Mark Twain!,” a one-person play full of wit and wisdom, offering a delightful look at the life and work of America’s foremost humorist.

On June 8, “Slim and Trim” is the topic as nutritionist and registered dietician Judy Prager discusses weight control for seniors.

The June 15 program will feature mezzo-soprano Sharon Ruchman in an encore performance of “A Medley of Jewish Song.” Her program includes folk songs, show tunes and Yiddish melodies. Ms Ruchman is a graduate of the New England Conservatory and Yale School of Music.

A real treat is in store for the last two weeks of the month, when lunch will be served al fresco under a huge tent in the beautiful backyard of the building. On June 22, guitarist and singer Larry Ayce will return to perform fun ballads, country music, old standards, and special requests. Then on June 29, singer-songwriter Willie Nininger of Southbury will appear in concert. Mr Nininger has played in clubs and concert halls across the United States and Europe and has a great reputation as both a folk humorist and top flatpick guitarist.

In case of heavy rain on either of those dates, the lunch and music will be moved to the social hall at the United Church of Christ, 283 Main Street North, while renovations take place in the Walzer Campus social hall.

Lunch reservations must be made by Thursday for the next week’s program. Call Debby Horowitz, Brownstein Jewish Family Service Program Director, at 267-3177, ext 105. The Love & Knishes program is sponsored by The Homesteads at Newtown, LLC.
