A nice little winning streak came to an end for the Newtown Middle School softball team in a 10-7 loss to Rochambeau.
The Lady Lions had secured victories over Jockey Hollow (1-0), Bethel (6-1), Derby (13-3) and Jockey Hollow again (4-2) before falling to Rochambeau.

Newtown 1, Jockey Hollow 0 â Nicole Alberico scored the lone run of the game off a two-out, run-scoring double by Kelly Tenney in the top of the fourth inning. Tenney had a pair of hits on the day as Stacy Broughton, Katie Schmidt, Caitlin Cosgrove, Jacqui Kirol, Katie Kirrane, Alberico, Jax Van Waalwijk and Nora Lynn Shimko all had hits. Broughton earned the shutout, whiffing seven batters along the way.
Newtown 6, Bethel 1 â Pitcher Jenna Legros set a new school record, striking out 18 batters as she led the Lady Lions to the win. Nicole Alberico had three singles and Joanna Barry had two to power the offense. Jacqui Kirol tripled. Emily Kluga and Kelly Tenney made fine defensive plays.
Newtown 13, Derby 3 â Katie Schmidt was 3-for-4 with three singles and Megan Sajovic was 3-for-3 with a pair of singles and a double to lead the Lady Lions over Derby. Jax Van Waalwijk tripled and homered while Katie Kirrane and Melissa Fracker each had a pair of singles. Sajovic also pitched the Lady Lions to the win, whiffing 10 batters.
Newtown 4, Jockey Hollow 2 â Melissa Fracker ripped a three-run double in the bottom of the second inning, helping the Lady Lions rally past Jockey Hollow for the win. Jax Van Waalwijk was 3-for-3 with two singles and a double and Renata Villareal had a pair of hits to pace the offense. After the Lady Lions allowed two runs in the top of the first, Megan Sajovic came on in the second and pitched shutout ball the rest of the way. Joanna Barry, Jacqui Kirol, Melissa Fracker, Katie Schmidt and Van Waalwijk all made fine defensive plays.
Rochambeau 10, Newtown 7 â An eight-run, fifth-inning explosion by Rochambeau doomed the Lady Lions to the loss. Melissa Fracker singled and tripled, Joanna Barry singled twice, and Laura Newberry singled twice with a pair of RBI to lead the Lady Lions.
