NMS Student Team Places First In STEM Competition

BALTIMORE, MD. — A Newtown Middle School eighth grade team that entered the eCybermission 2010-11 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) competition sponsored by US Army was announced as first place winners this week.

Under the guidance of NMS teacher Beverly Andracchi, students Glen Damota, Cornelius Dunn, Clay Gattey, and Constantine Gregoire took first place in the competition. Other first place winning teams from the state were West Woods Elementary School in Hamden and Timothy Edwards Middle School in South Windsor. Connecticut had 12 teams register for the 2010-2011 eCybermission competition.

ECybermission is a free, web-based competition for students in grades six through nine.

Winning student groups demonstrated a strong understanding of the STEM subjects, according to eCybermission.

All students on the first place teams will receive $1,000 in US EE Savings Bonds, and each student on the second place teams will receive $500 in US EE Savings Bonds. The first place winning teams will move on to the regional competition, where the teams will compete with other teams in their grade across the Northeast region for an additional $2,000 in savings bonds and a chance to attend the National Judging and Educational Event, taking place in Washington, D.C., in June.
