Accents Were All Natural
Accents Were All Natural
(The following letter to theater reviewer Julie Stern has been received for publication.)
Dear Ms Stern,
I read with interest your review of Cash on Delivery! in The Newtown Bee last week.
Like you, I do not like to hear fake British accents either on stage or screen, and I think it is better that actors use their native tongue rather than butcher someone elseâs.
However, I feel must correct you on one point to do with this production.
All of the actors without exception used their natural voices; even me, Nick Kaye. You see, I am British. I was born in Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire, about 25 miles northwest of London. Having said that, Iâm sure my mum (note the spelling) would like me to speak with a better accent, but it is what it is. I have only been in this country for 12 years and havenât lost my native accent yet.
I hope this will not deter you from reviewing future shows at Newtown.
Yours sincerely,
Nick Kaye
