Caring For

Elderly Parents

WASHINGTON — On Thursday, June 2, at 7 pm, in the Wykeham Room of Gunn Memorial Library, Roberta Satow will give a talk about her new book, Doing the Right Thing: Taking Care of Your Elderly Parents Even if They Didn’t Take Care of You.

Ms Satow is chairperson of the Department of Sociology at Brooklyn College and a practicing psychoanalyst in New York City. She has taught the Sociology of Gender at Brooklyn College as well as Columbia Teachers College for the last 20 years.

In addition to the book Gender and Social Life (Allyn & Bacon, 2000), she has written numerous articles on sociological and psychoanalytic subjects that have appeared in journals and magazines such as Partisan Review and Psychology Today. Her new book, Doing the Right Thing, was published in March 2005 by Jeremy Tarcher Publishers.

“Middle-aged caregiving is a stressful stage of life that many of us — the author included — are confronting, but for which we are often unprepared,” says Ms Satow. “Doing the Right Thing is an essential guide to caring for our elderly parents in a way that will allow us to have our own lives, to grow, to heal — and perhaps, make peace with the past for good.”

Call the library for further information at 860-868-7586. The program is free and open to the public. registration is requested, but not required.

Gunn Memorial Library is at the juncture of Route 47 and Wykeham Road, opposite the green in Washington.
