Playoffs â Arrrghhh!
By Kim J. Harmon
It may be the most exciting week of the spring, but itâs also the week I hate the most: tournament week.
On Monday, Newtown High School sent its baseball team to Bunnell for a South-West Conference quarterfinal game (the first time the Nighthawks have been in the playoffs in seven years, by the way), sent its boysâ track team to Bunnell for the SWC championships (which the âHawks had a fair shot of winning, mind you), sent its softball team to Brookfield for an SWC quarterfinal game (the last time these two teams played, it was a thriller) and sent its girlsâ tennis team to Joel Barlow for the SWC team championship match (and the last time the âHawks were in something like is anyoneâs guess).
Iâm not complaining because Iâm the only person here in The Newtown Bee sports department; Iâm complaining because I want to see all of those games, matches and/or meets.
But rather than here me whine, however, we should be giving Newtown High its props for having so much to do in tournament week. There are schools where the coaches and athletic directors are busy collecting uniforms and boxing up the equipment â not playing.
And in Newtown, there is a lot of games, matches and/or meets left to play.

Can anyone have a better day that Lisa Morgan had last week?
The Newtown High School senior â the pitcher for the softball team â fired a no-hitter and set the schoolâs all-time strikeout record in a 4-0 win over Stratford.
And on Senior Day, no less.

It canât get any more miserable than it got on Tuesday afternoon at Brookfield.
Oh, it was a great day for the Newtown High School girlsâ track and field team as it defended its South-West Conference championship, but they had to do it on a rainy, blustery, bitter cold afternoon.
Isnât this spring? Or did I miss something?

I should have known better ⦠but I didnât.
When I was out searching for a hooded sweatshirt a few months ago all I was looking for was something colorful. Red, light blue, light green â it didnât matter. And when I found something orange I thought, âCool.â
I didnât think about the word TENNESSEE emblazoned across the front of the thing. I liked it because it was orange.
Oh, man.
